Ok Ive read alot of tko 500 install post here, there is some stuff i dont understand.

1) the crossmember can be relocated, by grinding the tack welds, witch welds were?

2) can grind out the crossmember trans mounting holes, theres only a small amount these can be grinded, how much do the holes need to be streched.

3) will stock length alm. drive shaft work?

4) exasust hangers wont fit, how is this corrected?

I have everything need to complete my install just need to learn about the crossmeber relocation before i start. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!! :flag:

3.) stock length driveshaft will work. you will need to get a new slip yoke though

4.) many people cut the hangers off. I have also heard that you can eliminate the piece that the hangers go into when you are installing it.

The crossmember is tack-welded to two tubes (one on each side), that act as the sleeves that hold the bushings and the long bolts fastening it to the car. You need to grind the welds on each side so the crossmember can slide freely backwards and forewards on the two sleeves. The crossmeber should be repositioned (and rewelded) 5/8" foreward of its former position to accept the trans mount.

If you relocate the crossmember, you don't have to slot the holes. A lot of shops will sell you a new crossmember welded and ready to install. Powered by Ford in Orlando, FL sell theirs for about $90.

5.0 Nostalgia is correct about the driveshaft and slipyoke, BUT if you haven't upgraded to an aluminum driveshaft yet, the FRPP M-4602-J comes with the right yoke already installed.

if you dont want to modify your own crossmember, you can buy one from HPM, thats the one i used and it worked great. The TKO should come with another front yoke when you buy it, if not, check where you bought it from, i purchased my tko from D&D in michigan and they included the yoke with the purchase. the stock type driveshaft will work when you change the yoke. either the stock or FMS alum. driveshaft they will both fit ok. i also dont have hanger on the exhaust, if you using long tubes, dont even worry about hangers, the short h-pipe will hang w/o any problems, i even had a stock type h-pipe on w/o hangers and it didnt hang real low.

everything is correct that these guys said...the place that installed my tko 500 had to shim the transmission mount for it to fit right but its no big deal it was only two washers on each bolt. they had no problem with the hangers for the h-pipe...or so it seems. they look like they are hooked up just like they were before. good luck to you

yeah i just got a new TKO 600 if your car is already a 5 speed you dont need a new crossmember i didnt.Th one on my car bolt on and adjustable i had to move it 2 inches back no big deal if its an auto then yeah might as well get a new crossmenber you will need a new yok and stock drive shaft will work

On the yoke subject, Tremec used to include one with the oldTKO. The new TKO 500 and TKO 600 are now sold to the distributors (from Tremec)seperately from the yokes. Point is, if they charge you seperately for the yoke w/ a TKO 5 or 600 (since Tremec no longer makes the old style TKO), you're not necessarily getting scammed.

How much they charge you for the yoke is another story ;) .

Okay we've beaten this topic to death :D
