I currently have a 69 coupe with a 302, C4, and a 8inch rear end. I am also planning on building a 393 or 408 based 351w. So I am thinking about putting a tko or a t-56 in, along with either a 8.8 or 9 inch, and I have a few questions about the swap. I wont be racing, maybe take it to the drag strip on occation, but will probably be driven often on the streets and highways.
I have some questions about parts, aside from the obvious(crossmembers, drive shafts, u-joints, yokes clutch pedal assembly)
-- Bellhousing/Scattershield questions
I understand the TKOs come with differnt length imput shafts. I seen them refered to as long shaft/short shaft. Am I correct in assuming that the long shaft is the standard length shaft?
After looking at ModernDriveline.com, I came across the Ford Racing 1995 Cobra R aluminum bell housing(M-6392-R58). I did not see them mention a spacer/adapter, It did say that the TKO(standard shaft length I presume) would bolt right up to this. I also read that this is supposed to put the shifter location pretty close to the original hole.
I also understand that I can also use a Toploader bellhousing, with an adapter, and the shifter is supposed to line up with the hole, therefore I was looking at Lake Woods 15200 scattershield, with an adapter. I would however, find a scattershield with the proper depth to accomodate the standard shaft TKObut I have not been able to find one that says it will work, with the exception of the Ford Racing Bell Housing mentioned above.
I was also looking at Mcleod scattershields, their part numbers 8624 which does not have a hyd clutch bracket, and 8629 which is the same and does have a hyd bracket. Does anyone know if either of these can be used with a cable or hyd clutch? I want to have the ability to use a cable clutch and possibly upgrade to hyd later on.
-- Flywheels And Clutches
I know I will need one to match the balance of the engine. I also understand it will have to be a 157 tooth. I seen on summit that flywheels can only handle certain size clutches. Im not sure how much hp or tq the engine will have, but it will probably have quite a bit..maybe 500?
Since im going to be driving it often on the street, I was thinking of using a steel fly wheel. Not sure if I should use a billet one or not, or use a aluminum one after all.
So my next question is, how big and what kind of a clutch should I get? I read that a lot of people here have Centerforce Dual frictions clutches. I also read that the largest I can go is 10.5 inches.
If I flywheel says it can handle a 10.5 inch clutch, can it also hand a smaller clutch?
I will probably start with a cable clutch kit, probably the one from Modern Driveline, with the possibility of upgrading to the JMC hyd conversion, which leads me onto clutch pedals.
I read somewhere, forget where, but supposedly the pedal support brackets for the auto cars are the same as the manual cars, therefore all I need to find is a clutch pedal and hardware itself, and either trim or find a manual trans brake pedal. Is this true or would I be better off finding a manual clutch and brake pedal assembly? Does a reproduction clutch pedal or an original clutch pedal mount to the cable clutch easily? How about the hyd clutch?
--Rear ends
I am planning on using a 8.8 inch. How strong is a 8.8 inch? Will I need a custom made one to handle the power? Would I be better off using a 9 inch?
I know that there is a possibility of having to modify the trans tunnel to get the correct driveshaft angles.
I may also put a T-56 in instead. WHat is different about putting a T-56 instead of a TKO? I figure I will need a different bellhousing/adapter, and I know tunnel clearence will most likely be an inssue.
Also, since the bellhousings fit both 302 and 351s, I was thinking about upgrading my drive train and installing it with the 302 still in place, then build and install the stroker later. how much work would have to be redone once I start installing the stroker?
I seen ModernDriveline.com mentioned quite a bit here and am considering using them to do the swap. Was wondering how peoples experience has been with them.
