Tools needed to change out U-Joint?

Once i have the car in the air do I only need a pair of pliers to remove the clips? Any tips for those that have done this?

I am trying to weigh all my options for ruling in or out the d/s for my current problems and if something gets upgraded all the better.

Ya, maybe a screwdriver...I think youll have to take the driveshaft all the way off tho, as the U joint wont just fall out, you have to either pound it out with a hammer or use a press and push it out...

hammer, table vice, socket, and pliers... thats the shade tree mechanics way. and you need to take the ds out of the car.

So then it is pliers/screwdriver to remove the clips, then vise/hammer/socket to "persuade" it out. Reverse to install it?

yeah. take out the clips. put the ds in the vice to hold it for you. then put the socket on one of the caps of the u-joint. now hammer that bitch out. Take the u-joint out and put the new one in. now place the caps on, put them between the vice and SLOWLY use the vice to press the caps on. make sure all is a in and put the clips back in.

A new aluminum driveshaft would be the very easy to install. That's what I plan to do when I need a u joint.

i do U-joints with the shaft on the car.

two ways i do it:

one can use a hammer and socket as a die to press the caps out.

or one can use a ball joint press (big C-clamp) and the adapters in the kit in lieu of a socket).

I do it each way - depends on what the joints look like (sometimes the hammer and socket method wont work).

Yep, A vice is sometimes necessary. If you want to make it easy on yourself, yank the DS and do it the easy way.

AutoZone has u-joint presses that they rent out free...and work great. I've used them for ball joints and u-joints and every time it works really well.

Yes sir. That is what I was trying to spit out in my above-post. I Liked it so well I bought one.

I noted that joints can be done in the car in case one has a strange muffler or rear end set up (on my 88, I would have to remove some stuff to remove the DS). or if you dont happen to have any D4 on hand.......

Like Scott et al said, if it is easy to remove the DS, go for it.
