Its about time to upgrade the drivetrain on my car and im still unsure which what I wanna do, the car has an AOD in it now obviously and it works just fine, doesnt slip or anything, but I also have a C4 that needs to be rebuilt that a friend of mine will fully rebuild for $150. I wanna do 2800 stall, B&M shift kit, and 3.73 gears, 3.55s with the C4. I m just unsure of which way I wanna go, Any suggestons or help would be greatly appreciated....

I have two cars with C4's. My Capri has a carbed 302, C4 and 2.73 gears, and it is still marginal to drive on the highway, 2900 to 3000 rpm at 70, much less cruise at 75. I have an aod in the garage waiting for installation.

The 79 has 4.10 gears and a C4, and is a hugh blast to drive, for five miles at a time.

If your car is a toy only, the C4 is great. If you have to drive it, and have ac and such, absolutly stay with the aod. If you put enough gear in a car with a C4, you will lose most of your street driveability.

With the aod you can get most of both worlds.

I completly agree with rd. If your car will be a strip only car, go with the C4, as they are cheaper to build up.

Any other case though, (I personally would) go with the AOD. This way, you will have overdrive, and still be able to take your car on the highway and drive it daily.

The overdrive will seriously be the deciding factor - it's a very crucial thing to some. Nothing can beat a c4 or c6 though, Ford built em well.

Yea i'm leaning more towards the AOD simply for the same reasons mentioned " the overdrive" i do drive my car daily so the C4 will kinda suck....

Try driving the car exclusively without OD and see how you like it. My friend gave up after 3 days and stuck with his AOD for now. (although after seeing me pop the clutch and burn out effortlessly he is seriously debating a t5 conversion)

i'd agree with the above. my 65 has a c-4 with 3.55's and it's what i call my around the hood car.........would'nt wanna go on any road trips in it ( has short tires on it now ) but c-4's are tough lil bugers.
another reason you may wanna go aod is i see alot of really bad ass built stangs for sale with c-4's and i think dang, how awesome it would be if it had od so you could go anywhere.......costs more but may make the car more desireble in the long run..........besides, we aod owners need all the incentive we can keep the aod's around. i think it's gotten to the point an aod will be considered rare......lol.....and very sleeper. over drive is kinda like a/c, once you have it hard to live with out it....
