I am thinking of getting a Trac Loc for my Mark VIII. The question is does it have to be done at a shop? I mean is it a drop in kinda thing or does the side load and all that crap need to be redone?
The open diff is killing me. Its stupid, it was Fords second most powerful car of that year (just behind the Cobra) and they leave an open diff in it.

everything will have to be adjusted, just like installing a ring and pinion. are you sure you don't have limited slip already, all Mark 8s were should have had it from the factory.

Why would you upgrade to poop?

Auburns are great.

Auburn is nice but too much for a luxury cruiser. Just need better traction out of the hole and through corners. Dont need/want the noise/expense of one.

Also, no Mark VIIIs came with Trac Locs. IDK if any Mark VIIs did.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to say that I think Ford's T-lok system sucks. It's never really worked well for me, even when it was "working well." It needs a rebuild now, and has for quite some time and I've got 40,000 miles on this car. It really has never functioned properly, and sometimes (even along time ago) I'd have a hard time kicking the car sideways for donuts etc (one-wheel peel). It should be noted that I rarely do donuts/burnouts etc on the car at all. The stock tires did last 40K, and still had rubber left, but needed to be changed due to uneven tire wear in the rear-even with tire rotations). I don't race at the drag strip either, so it's not like I "punished" this T-Lok.

Anyways, I go for a rebuild next week (anyone know how much this will cost from the dealership?), so maybe I'll see an improvement then.

I can straight say that the Auburn LSD is one of the best upgrades i have done. Its ****ing Awsome. I can feel the torque splitting between wheels in a turn. Torque Bias Diff FTMFW!!!

There is a cheap trick to re-build a better trac-loc.

Can't give a step by step, but basically you reuse an old clutch and plate from the worn out trac-loc, and install them in conjunction with the clutch plates and clutches with the rebuild kit. It makes the differential "tighter" and offers a more positive enguagement.

Trade off may be less useable life, depending on driving style.
