Okay so I was driving the other day and decided to give it some gas. I floored it in first (Shift lever in D) and took it to about 5500 rpms and let up, but before it shifted, I gave it more gas. So it was like floored, stopped, floored again. Anyway it wouldnt shift out of first and made a weird bang noise.
Ever since then, sometimes my car makes this bang noise when upshifting or downshifting. It happens randomly.
Also, I have the dreaded torque converter shudder. Under light load the car tries to lock up the converter but the converter can't grab.

Does this sound like a converter issue or a tranny problem?

The only sound I can relate it to is when you are driving a manual and you are going wot and from first to second drop the clutch and you get that bang.

my best advise is carry it to a few reputable tranny shops usually they will test drive and offer there expert opinion and an estimate free of charge. thats why i carry it to atleast 3 shops and compare notes i have done this in the past and usually you will get some good info. about what is wrong with tranny.

The shudder is for sure the conveter. The lock-up function is not working. You can have a chip burned to shut the lock up function off, so it won't even try to engage lock up. I had a 95 GT that did this to me. The chipped cured the problem. The trans shifted better too because they tune revamped all the shift points, firmness and rev limiters. With the lock up function shut off, the trans will run a little bit warmer, but you can always install a trans cooler. Lock up is also used to save a little bit of gasoline. The mileage won't suffer, because when lock up kicks in it is usually between 2 and 3rd gear and it only lowers RPM's by 200-300 RPMs.
