Tranny problem, plz help

Ok I bought my car knowing the tranny didnt like 2nd gear, and its very hard to get it in 2nd. The problem is that it will not stay in gear. I will push in clutch, put the lever in 2nd position, does not grind at all or make any deal about going in. But when I let off the clutch, 2nd is not engaged, and if I try to push it in again it will grind (because everything has sped up now) I was thinking the actual gear itself was broken. But sometimes (randomely it seems) it will go in 2nd no problem and stay in second. I got to thinking maybe its the shift linkage and/or the aftermarket shifter, which is a hurst. I dont want to spend alot of money on a new tranny if thats not the problem.

Blocker ring on 2nd gear. It holds it in gear. Time for a rebuild or a new tranny.

Only other thing I can think of is if your shifter has stops, it MIGHT be adjusted to far to where it doesn't let 2nd gear engauge all the way.

If it was the blocker ring, wouldnt it prevent it from going in at all times?

Nope. Just like a syncro that is on it's way out will only grind sometimes or if you shift it "just right"
