My 92 LX 5.0 transmission slips when driving at any speed when I step on the gas. 70 mph when I get on the gas pedal the tach will peg but the car will not go any faster. If I go easy on the accelerator pedal the car will go faster but you have to go real easy. It will also slip at lower speeds. It is an auto Trans and has 20 thousand miles with real good care. It seems to me that I had this same problem 10 or so years ago and we replace some sort of cable which had stretch or was worn, but my mechanic doesn't seem to remember. Any suggestions?

Check your fluid and make sure your tv cable didn't come undone. It is connected to the throttle linkage at the bottom by the throttle body. If it is unhooked our out of adjustment it will fry your trans in no time.

See that yellowish colored bushing in the pic above? That's the tv cable bushing, they're notorious for cracking and falling out.

Bushing completely gone. Cable is just hanging down and not attached at all. Now I have to decide whether I want to put the metal bushing in or go back with the plastic one. Thanks guys.

Whatever you do do not drive it any more until that is fixed. Without that cable attached it takes very little driving to do serious damage to the trans.

Thanks. Been there myself a time or two.

Use the metal bushing. It is way superior to the plastic one.

I never had a C4 but cant believe how common this problem is . Wonder how many tranny shops have ripped off people with this problem . Keep it for two days and charge them a grand .

Drove it right home and parked it, maybe 5 miles. Popped the hood this afternoon and no bushing, cable just flopping. Ordered metal bushing and clip hoping it comes this week. Saved me a bunch of money becauseI will install it myself. Thanks again.

C4s don't have this problem, AODs do. Ford never put a C4 in a V8 fox-body (I don't think they put C4s in them at all, but can't remember for sure).

One more question for you. I have seen some pictures showing the shoulder of the bushing on top of the bracket and I have seen some pictures with the shoulder under the bracket and the shoulder is almost like a washer between the bracket and the cable. Is there a correct way or does it make any difference?

Yeah, just double checked, I was wrong, they switched to that p.o.s. C5 in 1982, then replaced that with the AOD in '86.

It's been years since I've replaced mine, don't have the car anymore. Surely someone here can answer the question.
