Trans throw-out bearing

My friend has an '03 Mustang GT, which we changed out the throw out bearing because it was sqeaking. We didn't put any kind of grease on the input shaft, but the throwout bearing had some inside. Well, my friend is making a long distance trip and says he can feel it grinding on the input shaft when he has to change gears going through the smaller towns. I've not heard of applying any kind of grease on the input shaft before, and we weren't informed of this when buying the part (of coarse). Is that standard to apply some type of grease to the inside of the bearing before installing?

If so, can my friend just remove the clutch cable dust shield and apply some onto the input shaft somehow, provided there is clearance?

NOTE: Before installing the transmission, the ball stud, the clutch release lever and the input shaft must be cleaned and lubricated with grease.

Install the transmission. For additional information, refer to Section 308-03A (T5OD) or Section 308-03B (TR3650).
