I just bought a 1976 cobra 2 with out an engine and a transmission. How hard is it to put a 289 or 302 in it, and how hard will it be to get any transmission that will fit? thanks for the help.... i sure need it.

If it's a factory V8 car and any of the mounts are still there, it won't be too bad. You'll need an original oil pan for the 302, although I've heard stories of large hammers and pipes being used to "modify" a standard pan. With the original cast exhaust manifolds, any of the small bellhousing C4 automatics will go in. If you plan to use headers, you'll need the original Mustang II bellhousing/flexplate/convertor.

Most of the parts used on the II for v8 installation were specific to the car....a donor car is a Godsend.

It won't be that hard, but it also won't be that cheap. You can usually find everything you need on eBay, or post up on the classifieds section of mustangii.net
You'll need the frame mounts, motor mounts (rebuilt sets show up occasionally, NOS ones are really $$), oil pan, and either headers or manifolds. Since your car had a 4 speed, you'll probably want to go with a T-5 from a newer Mustang GT. That has its own set of modifications, but is well worth it.
