whats up

i have a 96 ford mustang gt 4.6 convt, it's an automatic, with stock setup.

i'd like to help the transmission a bit and see if i can install a tranny cooler on it.

can anyone recommend a good low-pro tranny cooler for my autotragic stang?

thanks a ton

also, would a tranny flush be required if i install a tranny cooler?

B&M makes a good tranny cooler for around 50 to 60 bucks and no you dont have to drain the fluid to put the cooler on its pretty straight forward easy install. This wont do very much as far as performance goes are you planning on a torque converter?

Oh, and your stang is not autotragic just get a converter and gears and you'll be just as fast as a manu without the missed gears.

also, i only wanted the tranny cooler to make my trans last just alittle longer than normal. think it's worth it?

The cooler will help it last longer, I think for 60 bucks and a self install its well worth it. A lot of retired peps put them on their motorhomes to help cool down their over worked trans. Most companies claim that you get up to 35% more life out of your trans and you can go longer between flushes.

I got an auto because my wife has my junk in a lock box but I was surprized what i could do with an auto (besides look good, sound good, and lose).

Do a search on torque (stall) converters and gears and find which setup you like best.

i did and read a really good article, same with some information for howstuffworks.com, i think i might go with 410's for gears, now for torque converters, i haven't found anything yet, anyone care to enlighten me on how they work or what benefits?

Get the one in my sig. It was $55 to the door from Summit Racing.

It's one of the bigger ones offered, and bigger than the Steeda version.

I have the Steeda version which is actually made by Ford Racing. You can't go wrong with either the Steeda or B&M kit.
Don't hate the autos.

Well, I have a B&M cooler. It's the largest one they make with the installation kit included.

As far as gears and converter...I have 4.10's and a PI 3200 stall. I did the 4.10's a year and a half ago along with the headswap, and the converter and built transmission were this summer. They both help out the auto out a lot! I haven't been back to the track yet since the new trans and converter were installed, but the general consensus is usually a 5 tenths gain in the 1/4 from a good stall converter if you have good tires.

Transmission coolers are rated by GVW, Gross Vehicle Weight. So, the typical ones sold by Steeda and B&M are the 24,0000 GVW which is designed for a vehicle that weighs 24K Lbs. IMO, 8 times the weight of a typical Mustang ( around 3,000 lbs ) is a bit over kill. I opted for an 18K GVW unit that was a little smaller and fit very nicely in front of my stock radiator. I did by-pass the entire radiator cooling system which is another option you will need to consider when installing your tranny cooler.

I did the tranny cooler, 4.10's and a chip to change shifting points, increase pressure and recalibrate the speedo, what a difference !!!
