Hey, I have a 96 GT, a few months ago i my clutch cable snapped and I replaced it with one from advanced auto because I needed my car the next day, otherwise I would have bought an adjustable one, that's just the background, hopefully i'm answering my own question... but anyways

6 months later now my car has started grinding into 5th gear. If I ride the clutch for about 10 seconds and hold the shifter near 5th I feel the clutch slowdown and stop and then it will go in with no problem, but if I try to simply go from 4th to 5th it grinds nasty. Also I can no longer shift into reverse while my car is running, otherwise it just grinds. Is my clutch dead or is my cable loose? or something else?? Any help would be outstanding!!

5th gear sounds like a synchro going out, experiancing the same problem different gear, soon to have my trans rebuilt. The grinding for reverse is do to reverse not having a synchro therefore the trans must be stopped in order to smoothly shift into reverse. Most likely your pilot bearing (anybody correct if wrong) is worn out causing your trans to not slow down all the way, which would cause your trans to grind when shifting into reverse. Simple solution, is to simple shift into 5th or 1st before shifting into reverse. This will stop the trans and hopefully prevent it from grinding or replace the pilot bearing.

you can look and see if the cable it routed 100% correctly and/or if it is binding up on something as well maybe thats just the issue....and dont get an adjustable cable unless you want the same thing to happen to you again...stay with the stocker and get a firewall adjuster if you want adjustability
