Transmission grinding w/Tri-Ax

I've got a 1996 GT with a Steeda Tri-Ax on there. I bought it like this, so I have no manual for it (I don't know if it even comes with one for that matter). My transmission will occasionaly grind when shifting from 1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd and sometimes even putting it into first or fifth. At first it happened alot in second gear, so I thought it was the syncro...but then other gears started doing it, and I realized that when I tried to shift hard I had actually pulled the shifter down. I then pushed it back into place by putting in a gear and just pushing as hard I could. Obviously it now needs to be adjusted (as if it didn't before), and I took it by a shop owned by a buddy of mine and he said it needed to have the tranny rebuilt or a new one put in. He didn't know anything about the shifter I had in there, so he couldn't really say whether or not that was the problem. I guess what I'm asking is what you guys think is going on. Shifter? Tranny? Both? How do I adjust the shifter, and would you guys recommend getting a new tranny or just rebuilding the one I've got in there? DO most transmission shops know how to wrok on/adjust aftermarket shifters?

how many miles on the car? the only way the shifter could be a problem is if the stops were set improperly, not allowing the transmission to go all the way into gear. This would cause it to "pop" out of gear.
Other than that, your shifter can NOT be the cause of transmission malfunction. Sad truth is that you are going to need a tranny and its not the shifters fault

If you remove the boot cover on your shifter, you will see the stops....just back them off 1/2 turn from their current position....its not the stops though, but you can try it if you are bored good luck mang....

I was thinking the same thing Houston.
I think your stops are not adjusted correctly.I never had
a problem with my Steeda Tri Ax shifter since the day I
installed it.I must say I love my Tri Ax! :nice:

Dont listen to any of these guys about stops. Yeah if they arent set it might tear something up, but stock shifters dont have them. so stop blaming the stops.

95% sure its either a fluid problem or a syncro problem. 111k miles of a hard life will take a toll on thase weak trannys. check your fluid level by unscrewing the bolt on the side of the tranny. make sure its level, and stick your pinky in there. if you barely bend your finger your level is fine. if you have to jam your pinky in there an reach way down to get fluid, obviosly too low.

id start there.

Hey buddy, READ THE FIRST SENTENCE OF HIS POST. Its NOT the stock shifter. Its a TriAx.

riiiiiggghhhttt.. i know hes got a tri-ax. The stops are so you dont over throw your shift an break linkage and fork crap inside the tranny. Hes probably feeling grinding as hes shifting into the gear which has nothing to do with stops.

And Hey buddy, READ ALL OF WHAT I WROTE.

Umm, if your stops have back out or loosened up or something they could be preventing the shifter from going into gear all the way. fastangboi, Why don't you go try this. As you're driving, push your shifter halfway into a gear and let out of the clutch and listen as it grinds and the shifter pops out into neutral. Done? Okay, now that i have that out of the way, check your stops because it is a possibility. Thanks

Hey, I did read all of what you wrote, and yes, if you set the stops incorrectly, it will not go into gear, and will grind.

You gotta have your stops out pretty far to have those problems. im telling you 111k in a modded Mustang, im betting its either syncros, fluid, or a stretched out cable.

Yall and those darn stops.

lol, its because we want him to make sure its not the simple cheap things before he shells out big bucks to fix the synchos and everything else :nice:

well he can still check his fluid and make sure its not the cable. i seem to be the only one saying anything other than stops.

If he didn't have a shifter, what would recomend? most likely the things ive said.

I changed the tranny fluid less than a week ago, that was the first thing I thought of (especially since I only got the car 2 months ago). I'm going to try adjusting the stops, and then the clutch cable, but after that I guess it's going in for a rebuild. Is there an easy way to adjust the clutch cable? Where is it even located on these cars?

as far as i know the stocker is only adjustable by putting your foot under the petal and pulling up on it. at least thats the way it was in my 89 GT and my buddys 97 GT. They do offer alot of aftermarket adjustables. Adjustable either at the firewall or at the tranny similar to how you would adjust the brakes on a bicycle.

Do you know how to properly adjust your shifter stops??
