ive got a 71 with a c-4. when it is in drive it sounds like frying bacon near the front of it. also when on the freeway the power pulses even when the engine is smooth.
Sounds like the converter drive plate is cracked, broken or the pump is worn.
The only way I know of to check it out is to pull the transmission and look.
