transmission problem

HI! I have a stock 94gt aode with 58000 miles on it and the problem is when i'm driving at 1200-2500 rpm the transmission starts shifting gears up and down like crazy , then I have to slam on the throttle to bring rpm's up to stop doing this , also sometimes my radio volume goes up or down when that happens.Can somebody tell my what is going on?

Wow, this is a new one to me. Obviously there is an electrical problem somewhere...hopefully someone else can chime in on this.

In the meantime, I'll send this to the top.

Start checking the wiring harness. I had my tranny rebuilt and the guys barely secured the harness to the tranny tunnel. Later it fell, and burned itself on the exhaust. Actually burned through one wire, and halfway through another.

Also there are a few small sensors on the tranny that could be going bad. Do a search. Various people have had their trannys shift into neutral and then drop into first at WOT.... makes for a fun ride, but when sneaking though a yellow light and a cop is sitting in the intersection. It looks like you neutral bomb the car on purpose.

The stereo thing... that's a new one. Is it actually showing you on the screen the volume is moving? Or do you think you have speaker wires shorting and muffling the sound until they get a good power to send to the speakers and they just get louder so it sounds like the volume has been turned up?

not sure if that year is equipped with rds but it is a setting on radios/cd players that automatically turns the volume up to counter road noise at higher speeds. maybe it associates different speeds with gears and tries to keep up with your tranny.

Guess we should ask if the stereo is stock or not.

BTW - mine is stock, Tape Deck on top/CD player on bottom. My volume stays where I sit it.

ok te stereo is not stock is some JVC crap and when volume is going crazy is actually showing on the stereo .I would like to check something but I am "green" about the cars hehe amnit:

Does the stereo have a remote? Have you lost it? Might check in the seat, you may be sitting on it pushing buttons when you fart.

The Transmission control module controls the shifting in the transmission,
This tells it when to shift down when to shift up depending on if you are at part throttle or Full throttle or cruising, Have it checked out, make sure all your wiring and connections are good, The transmission is controlled from the computer...make sure that has good connections also..
Secondly you may have worn bands and clutches in your trans, so it cannot hold line pressure during whatever circumstance it happens. You may need a rebuild.

I woudl look into the MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor) on the tranny. It has a tendency to go bad on our cars, and report to the computer that the shifter was just moved. Your average mechanic will diagnose a bad MLPS as a slipping transmission, so it's easily overlooked. The sensor can be bought for less than $40 at Autozone, and it's really easy to swap.

I would suggest checking things in this order:

1. Check the transmission wiring for anything burnt or loose. The plastic connectors that holds all the wiring in place goes brittle with age and can break (like gcomfx said)
2. Replace the MLPS
3. Have the tranny checked out by a mechanic

Mine had the same symptoms as yours...
All I did was re ajust the MLPS and solve the problem over 1 year and tranny runs great..

I can't see how the radio could have anything to do with it. There are only 3 inputs on the radio, hot, hot w/ ignition and ground. Everything else is an output.

Do you have a real voltmeter? Do volts take a dump when this happens?

I have a stock voltmeter and my volts stay still at little more then half gauge

I went to Autozone to get MLPS and they don't have idea what that is , is there other name for that?
