Transmission Pull Difficulty?

Hi all, just wondering the level of difficulty for pulling a tremec 5 speed from my '04 GT... (and putting back obviously)

I know in a shop with a lift and transmission jack, it'd be fairly easy, but how difficult for not having those things?

is there difficulty getting to the bell housing bolts on top, anything I'd wanna know about before doing this?
how many hours roughly would you think for this task?

I pulled the transmission from my 2004 Mach 1 to replace a worn out release bearing and let me tell you, using a lift made everything so much easier. I would also recommend using a 1/2 impact wrench, a long 1/2" impact extension and 1/2" impact swivel sockets. It makes getting the top bell housing bolts a breeze. It took about 4 hours total.

I certainly know using a lift would be awesome.. it's not gonna happen for me, I don't have access to one.

so I'm gonna need to jack the car up as high as I can get and try it that way. That's why I was asking how difficult it might be.... like how hard is it to stab it back in, assuming the engine might tilt down a little bit, etc.

Not too hard if you have the right tools. You might want another set of hands to help with getting the tranny back in.

^^This. If you are pulling the transmission without a lift I would get a friend to help. I would say add another hour or two without a lift.

if not changing the clutch for now can I leave the bell housing in place and pull the transmission that way to make it easier?

ok, pulling because the transmission is shot, bearings, something it was ran completely out of fluid due to a leak by prior owner and whines like crazy.... I was going to get a used one and replace, but Ifigured it's be a lot easier if I left the bell housing in place?

Yea definitely, you can take the bellhousing off, if you are just replacing the transmission. There's only 4 points that hold the tranny to the bellhousing and then the crossmember. But, if I were you, i'd replace the clutch/resurface the flywheel while you are down there. It's a pita taking it off and putting it back on, so why not do everything at once.

I completely agree, and I know it's standard procedure if the Transmission or engine is out to replace a clutch... but right now, it's honestly a matter of funds, and I really need the car operational, even if that means I have more work later to do a clutch when the time comes. :/

so, if I did it this way leave bellhousing in place, it shouldn't really take too long to do the swap then huh?

Yep. When you put the transmission back in make sure it is lined straight, and having someone push the clutch back in might help a little. Also make sure you look up the torque specs when you put it back together.

That "have someone push the clutch back in" statement needs some clarification for someone new at removing a transmission. You shouldn't have to do that at all when reinstalling, and unless the input shaft is most of the way engaged and you're having real difficulty getting the splines to mate (you shouldn't since the old transmission kept it straight and you put the new one in neutral so the input shaft can rotate as it wants to), you definitely want to keep far away from actuating the clutch once the transmission is on its way out until the new one is fully in (unless you'd like to pull the bell, remove the pressure plate, get an alignment tool, re-install, and start over).

My trans whines also. I can't stand knowing that something is wrong. Unfortunately I do not have the funds or the time for the car to be down at the moment. All I can do is baby the car.
