I have a 93 Gt Mustang that is street legal, but mostly used for drag racing. 1/2 hr to the the track each way, and some occasional street driving.
I currently have a T-5z manual trans and want to convert to an auto with an overdrive that I can manually shift at the track.
What is involved in the conversion from manual to auto?
I'm looking at Dynamic Transmissions in CT. , PA Performance, who's a good company out there?
Converter type and stall?
I'm at 345 horse power and there may be supercharger later on down the road.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Below is my current set-up
Thanks

PA makes great tanny's. There kits should include a converter. If not ask them what to get. There are a few good company's for 5.0 converters. Pre-cision Industries makes a good one, but are pricey. Ask PA which route to take with there tranny.
Never did the swap so I'm not gonna preach to you.

The convesion is pretty straight forward, the auto is just much heavier then the stick so an extra hand is a good start. Instead of buying a new radiator for the cooler lines you and just pick up a nice tranny cooler and mount it infront of the existing radiator or something. You will need different bellhousing bolts, the ones on a t-5 are shorter then those on the auto. The flexplate bolts are shorter then those for the flywheel. Your starter is the same for either tranny. You will have to change the speedo gear. To save your sanity and keep the stress levels down you can keep the clutch pedal assembly there and just have the clutch pedal dangle or do the switch and swap over to an auto brake pedal assembly. You will need a different crossmember or you can grind down the tack welds and shift over the cross member to line up with the tranny then retack it. Where the shifter goes through the floor you might have to add a small section of metal, the hole in the floor for the stick is larger then the hole for a auto. Oh and you will need the computer for an auto, I dont think the computer from a stick car can be used with an auto, I could be mistaken.
Sorry that this isnt in any type of order at all, and I'm sure if I missed something someone can add it in.

As for a good tranny with overdrive Lentech makes some good autos.
Good luck

I dont know how feasible it would be for you, but I usually make a jig from a piece of sheet metal that will fit into the jack and has the same bolt pattern as the drain pan. that way I dont need an extra peson to help me lift a 120lb+ tranny.

As far as the computer, you can use the manual computer. I have used both the A9P and the A9L. They both work pretty much the same. You may have a preference though.

I actually thought about converting my 93 manual to an automatic. After finding out how much it was gonna cost to have a AODE built that could take 450-500 HP, i changed my mind. So I just had my super duty T-5 rebuilt. Much easier. But good luck to you.
