Transmission Service

Hello All:

I am going to get my transmission serviced (inspected, new gasket, new filter, new fluid (amsoil), don't think it's ever been done since I bought it used. My questions are, is there anything else that these guys look at? What for? How hard is it to do myself? (VERY limited mechanical knowledge.) Also what is a good estimate on price. Unfortunately I haven't saved up enough for new 3.73's and T-Lock or I would just have them put them in as well. Oh well, next time then. Thanks in advance for any help.

The transmission service is done every 30,000 miles. I think that they change all your gaskets, filters and fluid. I would take it to Ford if I were you. They do the transmission service and will go thru your whole car.

AAMCO and Continental Trans. are two other good places to take the car. Hell, I'd even trust this one Firestone I go to all the time to do the work. All three of these options are cheaper than going to a Ford dealer. And while many say take it to a Ford dealership, not all of them know what they are doing either, as prooven by a few people here on this board.

If you have an auto tranny, also look into a tech article on TCCOA.com that shows a how-to on drilling into the plate to firm up shift points and increase reliability and HP handling. You'd be surprised at how many shops know about this easy little trick that will make you think you've just intalled and performance tranny.

It may have a little piece of plastic from the factory if its never been changed. It has a little O-ring on it and was used to keep crap out of it during the assembly process. Other than that just wanna make sure there aren't large amounts of material or metal in the fluid. It'd be normal for a small amount of metal to be stuck to the magnet tho as thats what its there for. Don't use a cork gasket either. I made that mistake myself and got another rubber one.

This piece is non-functional crap? Doesn't need to go back in when changing fluid/filter?
