Transmission woes!

I bought a fairly modified 99 mustang convt. The guy who owned it before said he put a 2002 Cobra transmission in it. Is there a way for me to determine exactly what transmission is in the car? The reason I'm asking is I'm hearing a lot of noise when I downshift going into 1st or 2nd and I would like to get it fixed. The trans makes a growling or gargling noise when it happens. It only happens when downshifting, but not all of the time. Could it be the syncros? Any ideas?

Is is a 6 speed? I think all the cobras where 6 speed which would be the T56. I could be wrong though.

the tranny is from a 01' Cobra there was no 02' in the states only in australia or something like that
