I have a bit of a nasty clunk in the drive train that appears when I let off the throttle quickly or apply it after coasting. It seems like its related to loading or unloading the drive train.

I have:
- New TKO 600
- New drive shaft + uni joints
- Replaced the whole diff chunk after thinking that might be the issue and to get better gear ratios (still makes noise, but it could be similarly worn to the old one)

I just ran it up on jack stands and its making clanging rattling noises intermittently (but frequently) and when you blip the throttle you get a little more.

Ok heres a video of the lovely gearbox noises, mostly just idling in second with a few blips of the throttle. The noises are clearly emanating from the gearbox.

Havent found anything much useful about this sort of problem yet.

Any idea on whats causing it and/or how to fix it?

well have you driventhe car on the road or is it doingit just while you have it in the air?? how is ur clutch is your clutch fork tite i know i had the littleclipson the clutch forkbrake one time and it mad a horrible noise like that , allso check your pinion angle bc if that was off too since the suspenion is not loaded like it would normaly be on the ground you can possably be hearing you joint noise from being in a slite bind from being of angle.

that sound is normal for the TKO, your playing with the throttle on jackstands so there is no load on the trans, theres spacing between the gears, mine makes that noise when idling (with a cam), and while driving at very low rpms coming off and on the gas sometimes it does that as well. Dont worry, completely normal =)

Hi,

The reason why I'm doing it in the air is because it makes a nasty noise on the ground when driven and I'm trying to work out whats wrong. Whenever I load or unload the driveline quickly it makes a horrible metalic clunking noise.

The clutch throwout bearing and fork are brand new.

Interesting point about the driveline angle, I will try to look into it. However I am fairly sure its coming from the box. I will try to use a stethoscope to work out exactly where.

Its normal??? :notnice:

Mine will do it up to 60mph when coming on and off the gas (havent bothered trying higher) in 1st thru 4th (havent tried 5th). When does yours stop making the noise?

if its making the noise when you have load on the transmission above 2500rpms or so then yeah theres something wrong, mine will do it if I mess with the gas at very low rpms or when its idling, or when I have a load on the transmission then push the clutch in real quick. Aftermarket parts make noises, get used to it. My ears hurt after driving my car for more than an hour.

Who did you buy the Trans from? There is a shim issue with the new TKO transmissions. The 4th Gear (Input Shaft) is not shimmed properly. This will cause a vibration and noise.

Freakstang - thanks for the heads up! I was beginning to think it is something like that.

I got it from Astro performance. I only sent them an email on friday so I dont expect to hear from them in a while.

Has anyone tried royal purple oil as a replacement? I have heard on chevy forums that this can sometimes help.

Aliate X - it only really makes noise when coming on or off load (i.e. coming on and off the gas quickly). When its loaded and stays loaded its fine.

Yup mine does that too, never thought much of it, I was told its because there is spacing in between the gears, so at idle it will make the same noise with a cammed motor.

Now the vibration in 4th gear, I do get that and Id like to fix it lol.

Vibration in 4th... do you get it in 5th too? It could be a speed dependant driveshaft angle issue.

I did a check to see if the engagement was having an effect anyway. I unbolted the drive shaft from the diff and checked the play in the gearbox at various engagement depths - see this video

I checked the play in 2nd gear in that video. It seems like there might be play in the gear set, and that the play was the same regardless of engagement depth. I have heard that some new tremecs may have been shipped with incorrect shimming... my research continues....
