Trunk questions

Right now I am removing the undercoating and all the seam sealer inside the trunk on my 66. Ford sure liked to apply lots of seam sealer, wish I had half of what I removed fresh in a can since that would be more than enough to do the job.

First question is there are two phillips head sheet metal screws on the left side of the trunk deck. There was a tiny piece of hard board left under the rear screw. What did these screws hold in place? (see images, screws are galvanized)

Also, though not important what was the tape applied over the seam sealer for? My thoughts were to cover the sticky sealer so the next step in manufacturing could take place.

Second, I am considering buying a carpet kit for the trunk, but $200.00 or more seems a bit steep. What have most of you guys done?

Those screws held the filler panels in place. They basically just lay there and keep stuff from falling down into the quarter panel. I don't know about the tape.

As for the trunk kits go. I like the OE type with the plaid. Its also available in speckled. I don't care for the carpet kits. They just don't look right.

The trunk floor often fit poorly, I've seen gaps of 1/4" filled with sealer at the factory.

First question is there are two phillips head sheet metal screws on the left side of the trunk deck. There was a tiny piece of hard board left under the rear screw. What did these screws hold in place? (see images, screws are galvanized)
There should be a Masonite™ filler board there, to keep the trunk mat from flapping down into the fender well.

Also, though not important what was the tape applied over the seam sealer for? My thoughts were to cover the sticky sealer so the next step in manufacturing could take place.
Bubba put that tape in there, not Ford.

Second, I am considering buying a carpet kit for the trunk, but $200.00 or more seems a bit steep. What have most of you guys done?
High-dollar show cars use the OEM style rubber mats, you'd be hard-put to spend anywhere near that much on a mat.

If you don't need an original look I'd use some carpet, after you clean up and reseal the metal. It makes the trunk much nicer and gives more usable space.

Thanks for the replies.
The tape has the factory color paint on it. The tape was present at the back of the the two wheel houses and around the bumper support areas.

Maybe unique to a San Jose built car, but again not a big deal.

I thought I saw a post of a car of yours with the steel trunk barrier. I want to replace the cardboard with a steel partition also. Is the piece NPD sells any good?

Hey you carpet guys- how clean does the carpet cover the rear vertical surface as far as looks are concerned? That is a busy area, with those bumper bump ins and the gas filler tube. Is a backing support included in the kits?

I went with a custom carpet solution rather than a kit. A kit wouldn't fit mine since I had a larger fuel tank and steel trunk divider. The custom deal was less than a $250 kit.

How did a steel trunk divider effect a kit?
I am going to install a steel divider reason I ask, btw where did you get the trunk divider?

Uh Huh. The factory never painted the bolts, either, but yours are painted. Bubba painted them, too.

The kits will fit larger tanks, if you are using a 69 or 70 tank just use the trunk kit for that year.

Interesting, I had no idea.. In my case I needed a Ford Blue carpet, and the few places that supposedly had them, sent Medium Blue (which is a shade or two off). So I did it myself with a sheet of Ford Blue from ACC.

I couldn't push the forward edge of carpet down far enough for a good fit with the steel sheet behind the seats. If I used a different kit (for a larger fuel tank like I had) that might have helped, but not sure at this point. I needed a hard-to-find blue carpet anyway so went custom.

I bought my divider from NPD but they look like they are all the same...
