So I know there where some replys but I didn't get to read them all b4 the server crash. So if guys don't mind posting your opinions again that would be cool. I'll post below the replys that I have saved in my email


Hey guys,

Well I have read a lot of post from the past, and I am trying to figure out what combo to run. My friend is building a 351W for his 69 mustang and wants to have 400 RWHP when he is done. He plans to run this motor NA and carbed, it is a 4 speed with a 3.80 rear in it. Anyway, the bottom end of this motor is going to be a fresh rebuild, but it will be stock. I read a lot of post and people were suggesting to use either TFS-R heads, Vic Jr or AFR. Right now I am leaning toward AFR for a few reasons. I like the TFS-R, but he has a set of Hooker headers already and it looks as if he will need to get custom headers to make it work. The Vic Jr head bother me, because the RPM range was in the 3000-8000 and since this is a stock bottom end I don't think it will go past 6500 RPM. So that left me with AFR, I like the 205 outlaw race head found here http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommer...623&prmenbr=361

But I think it is a little out of his price range, so to get to my question how about the AFR 185 outlaw head found here http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommer...623&prmenbr=361

What would be a good intake and cam also. He has a new RPM air gap intake, but I think he might need to step up to a Vic jr intake.

Anyhow what type of #s can we expect at the wheels with the AFR 185, vic Jr and a hydrolic split pattern cam around 23x / 24x @ .050 with 112 LSA.

I could be way off with this setup so let me know how to get to that goal of 400 at the wheels if it is possible with the stock bottom end. I am kinda worried trying to do it NA, because most of the parts are gona need to rev high.

Yeah I'm interested in all this info as well. I've got a 351W longblock that was pulled out of a '69 Cougar sitting in my garage now. I've just been waiting on deciding what direction to go with for a fun weekend streetable car. I don't think I'll have too much of an issue on hood clearance either...
 
For your stated combo, I would estimate around 330 at the wheels on a Mustang dyno, 375 on a dynojet. If you go with a bigger solid roller you will probably attain your 400 HP goal, assuming you are quoting dynojet numbers. If you want 400 RWHP on a Mustang dyno, you are going to need a considerably more exotic setup to do it with an N/A 351 inch Ford.

You could also try something like a 408 with the more modest parts you suggested.

If it was me, I would be looking more seriously at the TFS-R heads, or the AFR 205's.

We went with AFR 185 heads, RPM Air gap intake, roller rockers, split pattern cam I think it was a comp cam CCA-35-246-3, but I am not sure now (it may have been a little more aggressive than that). We also used long tube header with a 1 5/8" tubes into 2.5" exhaust, MSD control box and mallory electronic dist. We are still using a edelbrock 600 cfm carb so there is still power to be made when we swap out the carb. Anyway the motor really screams, it makes a ton of power and revs up really fast. The only problem now is that the car has no traction, so now we need to focus our attention to the suspension.

It's cool fuuny this showed up today, I just starting to plan a 408 for a friend. This time I am going with the AFR 205, a solid roller cam and maybe try and use his Holley fuel injection system. We will see were this takes us.

do you have hp numbers on the 351w with 185 afr heads
? i doubt you guys made the goal of 400 to wheels. now your new project with the 408 and 205's has the potential of going into the 500+ hp range. You guys might want to look at a solid roller cam for that engine. there were some articles about the gains of running them in 393 strokers. huge hp differences at the 6000-6500rpm range.
 
AFR 225 or the TFS-R head stage 2, Comp cam solid roller .650 lift, TFS-R or Victor EFI intake port matched, all 4340 forged rotating assembly balanced at 28oz or neutral, SRP, CP, Ross, Probe 11:1 flat tops.

Easy 575fwhp and 540fwtq, NA on pump gas.
