turbo advice

Hi , looking for some input into putting turbo on my 86 GT. my Engine is a 306 with TFS 170 heads , Scorpion 1.6 roller rockers, 70 mm Accufab throttle Body, Cobra intake 24# injectors, Pro-m 75mm mass air , A9l ecm . What would i need to put turbo kit on? This is just a street car . Thanks in advance for any help ,

If this is your first turbo install I would get a kit from a name brand turbo company and a lot of research, make a plan.
Include jack stands.
And extra money.
If all goes right you'll never forget that first ride :burnout: :nice:

and time, account for things taking longer than you would expect.

Also, depending on the amount of boost your future kit will see, a tune may be in order. Do turbo's run FMUs for low boost kits as well?

no where I live we dont have any testing yet, my fuel system is stock right now
I'm not too familiar with turbo setups, but i would think at a minimum you'll need a higher flow fuel pump. I am in the middle of installing a low boost Paxton kit and i 'can' leave the fuel system stock (i.e. lines, injectors, etc.) but i did upgrade my fuel pump to a 255lph Walboro unit.

Im going to upgrade my pump even if I decide not to go turbo , also looking at sc kits also

You will need bigger injectors and a maf calibrated for them. The 24lb you currently have aint gonna cut it. A wideband o2 is also in order for any boosted application

Correction: You only need a "calibrated" meter if you're going to try skipping the tune. [Not] recommended for a turbo setup IMO.

With a tune, you can run whatever meter you like with any size injector compatible with your injector driver (i.e. Hi/Low impedance) and the transfer function will be scaled in the tune.

Take you initial budget and multiply it by 2.5. Then when that money runs out, take that amount and multiply by 2.5. That should get you in the ballpark of what will actually wind up being spent. Beware of scope creep, write down a plan and stick to it. If you are like me doing the "while I'm here I might as well...", the project will never be finished.

As others have said, plan on upgrading your fuel pump, injectors and plan on getting a tune. Do you know if you are staying with the factory computer, or doing an aftermarket system like Holley Terminator or Megasquirt? If staying stock, do you have a reputable tuner that is relatively close to you, or do you plan on doing a remote tune?

Also keep in mind that some stuff may break as you tear into the car, so have some of your budget set aside for this as well.

Good luck and make sure to post lots of pictures when the project gets going!

I'm on my second turbo car, and just sent a rod through the block, so definitely invest in the jackstands.

Here's a bare minimum to get you started:
- Fuel system - 340lph in tank pump, adjustable pressure regulator, and some larger injectors. I have 750cc in mine, plenty big for what I have and its very similar to what you have.
- Engine Management. Holley is popular, I have megasquirt. Whomever you want tuning it needs to tell you what system they prefer.
- Turbo system - Dealers choice. Build your own, buy a kit. If you buy, On3 is popular but may/may not fit the best. Same with eBay stuff - you get what you pay for.
- I'd stick around 6-8psi starting out. Anything north of that and it can get REAL western REAL quick.
