Turbo question

I'm looking into Hellion Power systems or Vecco High Performance kit..

the vecco is twin turbo..but the turbos are water cooled..what are the differences in water and oil cooled turbos?? which are better and more dependable?

I'm really interested in Hellion. I hear tones of great things about the kits and the quality! i cant say that for the vecco kits tho, but they r very interesting as well!

If they are water cooled this means they are ball bearing turbos. they will have both oil and water lines ran to them.

Ball bearing turbo are better than a normal turbo, but not needed. People do not normal going this route because they come with a little higher price tag.

Ballbearing will be alot easier to turn and will even have a little less turbo lag than a typical setup. The torgue response may come on sooner, like 500 rpm fast than a standard turbo.

plus they are way cool when you turn off the car and all you hear is the turbo still spinning for five min.

never heard of the vecco kit. But the Hellion kit is a very good qaulity.

thast funny..the vecco kits r cheaper than the hellion and the come with two water/oil cooled turbos vs the helion comming with one oil cooled..

That is why you should do all the research you can and find the best kit for you.

I have never heard a problem with Hellion turbo kits, and they have kits in stock.

It will be at your door that week, but most have a waiting list because they biuld as needed.

I would go with the hellion system. I have never heard a bad thing about the hellion kits or the customer service. I have found that usually if something is cheaper in price and it comes with more items in the kit that there is a reason for that. Usually the items are not good quality or the kit does not fit quite right. I would go with the proven kit that gets good marks time and time again.

Not all ball bearing turbo's are water cooled…and not all standard bearing turbo's are oil cooled. They come in many flavors. The "lag" difference between the two (ball bearing and standard) are not nearly as pronounced as what 71swing claims. Ball bearing turbo's do not coke up the way a standard turbo does…and for this reason cool down times are not nearly as crucial. In your typical non water cooled turbo setup (which 95% of us run) the standard turbo requires a cool down time to prevent hot oil from coking the bearing and shaft. What this means is that when you want to shut the car off….stay out of boost for about 5 minutes before hand to allow the turbo center section to cool a bit. Now…with a ball bearing setup the turbo continues to spin a bit after you shut down…which drastically helps with coking.

To add with your last question…water cooled tubo's are not required. In fact, a majority of 5.0 setups are non watercooled for several reasons. In factory turbo'd cars, convenience, longevity, warranty issues etc. are all major factors. When people want to shut their car off…they'll shut their car off. Turbo's are usually shoved way down in the engine compartment for packaging reasons and are prone to major heat soak issues. This is where the longevity and warranty come into play. For these reasons (among others) a majority of factory turbo's are watercooled. Hell…many factory setups continue to pump water through the turbo after the vehicle is shut off. Again…anti coking and heatsoak issues are major factors.

Now…in your typical 5.0L mustang the turbo's are usually out in free air. Their not tightly packaged (better heat dissapation)…and most turbo guys have no problem taking slight precautions to prevent coking of their turbo's.

Most manufacturer's don’t offer boost controllers wither their kit's anyways…so as long as it's compatible with the wastegate setup you have it's fine.
