I can get a pretty good deal on a set of twisted wedge heads but I'm not sure if they would be too much to mess with. First off, the guy that had them dropped a valve and the combustion chamber is pitted and needs to be machined and replace the valve, guide, etc. Secondly, they are pretty heavily ported (Stage 2-3). I'm not too sure if they would be too much for my stock bottom end 302 with track heat intake and stage 1 cam. He's only asking $450. Please help me decide it this is a good idea ASAP so nobody beats me to it.

Sounds good but the question is how much will it cost to get them fixed. I think Trick Flow might sell a single head so even 450 for a single ported head seems pretty good. I would check to see if you can get a single head in the worse case.

but do you think they will be ok on my motor since they're pretty heavily ported?? Maybe a little to much air for my displacement??

Well, they will make more power than stock now wont they... ;)

I say get em'

A machine shop should be able to replace the valve guide and machine and/or weld the combustion chamber. It shouldnt be more than $200

just an FYI i run TW heads and love em. really nice head.

i say grab em and get a machine shop to fix it up for you. with what a machine shop will charge you on top of the original price its still a great deal

Cool, I think I'll go ahead and get them. Any idea what I should be puttin to the wheels?? MM&FF (or 5.0 Mustang) did a trickflow top end kit on a high mileage block with 70mm T/B, 80 MAF for 30# injecotrs, 10* of timing, and 89 octane fuel laid down 290 something. I've got the identical set up but 14* of timing, 93 octane, and the ported heads. Just trying to get an idea of how it will perform compared to my previous set up so please don't flame me. By the way its an 89 GT with full MAC exhaust, 190 lph pump, upgraded T-5, 4.10's, suspension mods, and 110k on the clock. Thanks fellas!!

well on my combo (see sig, ignore the turbo stuff and PMS) N/A i made around 270 RWHP on a mustnag dyno, but had to kill it at 4800 rpm due to ignition problems, i sorted the igniton out but never got back to the dyno but the tuner told me i had a solid 300 RWHP on his mustang dyno, that felt about right

Damn, pretty good. Mustang dynos are a bit more realistic aren't they?? I just talked to the guy and he said the intake was matched to a fel pro 1250 and the exhaust was matched to a large port ford racing gasket (he'll get the number). So I guess they aren't ported to the max, but for $450 it's a steal.

forgot to say that the guy said i need to have my piston fly cut because of the larger valves and after market cam. If i'm correct this isn't necessary right?? I mean it's just a stage 1 cam (.499/.512 lift and 275/279 duration).

Very simple, when you take them to the machine shop to be fixed, bring your lower intake and have the intake and intake side of the heads port matched, this way you know you won't run into problems.
If the machine shop is good, they will also mach it up, and mill as necessary to get the perfect mating surface.

I don't have to worry about fly cutting the pistons though, right?? Is there any downside if I don't have the lower intake port matched to the intake on the heads?? Worth the extra money?

It's definetely worth the extra money.
May not need it in the end (meaning you don't pay for it, if it's not necessary), but at least request it, because if there is any edges of the intake ports (on the heads) obstructing flow, that's bad.

It's doubtful you'll need any extra ptv clearance, but you've gotta check anyway. Especially with TW's. You don't want to bend a couple hundred dollars in valves because your lazy.

Those heads r too big for ur setup as it sits now. U would need to go TFS stage 2 cam and a port matched RPM ll intake to take advantage of them. TFS TW stage 2/3 ported heads r great heads with the right engine combo.

Before I would buy them I would have them checked by a machine shop to verify stage 2/3 port and how much to fix and do a complete valve job on both.

i think we are all missing the big question. how damaged is the chamber. i built race engines for 3 years and have seen many a dropped valve w/ aluminum heads. some can be repaired with a die grinder and cartridge roll but the majority had damage that would not warrant repair. a bad spot in the chamber can cause a hot spot and detonation would be the result.have you seen the heads?

I got a set of seriously worked over TFS R head sitting in my shop right now.Fixed there worth alot.

Some bad detonation took out a good part of the cumbustion chamber near the spark plug (old style TFS R with the crappy plug location that always cracks).Anyhow they need a little bit of welding done on them, then grinding and probably .001 milled off of them to get them back to flat.

Using the right filler rod (assuming TIG)the weld will be just as strong as the cast, and should have nothing to worry about.
