yo what up guys,

newbie questions once again as i am still thinking about buying a stang. im thinking of a 64-68 coupe with a v8. i have checked some 0-60 times and have not really been impressed. so my question is if i get a stang with a 289 or 302, what kind of performance gains can i get at what prices. im looking to spend about 10 grand on the car (including parts and stuff) and the only performance things i can think of are: carb, intake, exaust/headers, and a cam. so what else can i do to it? i dont want somethin with like 500hp but somethin pretty decent and quick. another question, is it possible to install a cam without ripping the engine out or is there no clearance at all? i know i should probably wait untill i buy a car untill i ask but i want to know beofre i invest. thanks again.

any performance numbers you find will be a joke, because they are usually tested on bias ply tires and not geared or built for power and the test are about 40 years old.

installing a cam with the block in the car is easy, just remove the front of the engine, the radiator and grill.

You really wanna make one fly adda 100HP shot of laughing gas and woop some imports amd a lot of other cars out there.

There's a saying, speed costs money: how fast do you want to go.

This 10 grand; all for motor or whole car?
Before you go, learn to stop----Get a good set of disc brakes.
For the motor, get components that match. Cam won't do you much good if the car can't breathe, so you need the heads. And if you're thinking that much more HP make sure you get stong quality parts.

I think any answer is totally dependent on what you can do yourself. You could obviously save yourself a done of money if you could put your motor together on a stand and do other tasks without paying someone else to do them.

Also, you aren't very clear on what your budget is for each as well as how "nice" you want everything. For example: do you need all new parts or are you looking at used stuff?

The car and performance is all old news. In 30 years all the supercars perfomance and 0-60 times will suck compared to our new cars.
You might be able complete the car with 10k, but not with 500hp to boot, and all the supporting equipment. Do a search. It has been discussed many a times. I am sure most of them will even tell you the prices in the thread.

Another thing to consider is body stiffening. With the extra torque comes body flex. In the 64.5 to 67 years, the coupes didn't come with torque boxes. (1 in 67) If you notice any cracking in the paint behind the back seat windows it's usually due to body flex from too many aggressive launches. I'd invest in subframe connecters, export brace, monte carlo bar and weld in the torque boxes. You'll notice a much stiffer car with just the export brace alone.

If you haven't even bought the car yet and obviously have no idea what condition the motor is in; think about a crate motor from one of the reputable builders. With most of the parts talked about in the thread you could easily have $3500 before labor. Drop a keith Craft crate 331 in for $7K add 1K for associated misc 1K for brakes and 1K for stiffening. You'll have a 340 (appx) RWHP motor.

Now you have to worry about the transmission, rear end, tires, and body work. LOL A lot depends on what you can do yourself.

You might want to contact fastdave on this forum. He had a recent post about selling his 66 coupe with all the extras,
high performance engine, Trick Global West suspension, Shelby racing apron, etc. etc. he even recently added air conditioning. Sounds like an awesome car.

he had a post last week, asking the value of his mustang, and was looking to sell it for much less than he has invested in it.
He lives near Phoenix AZ.
good luck

thanks guys. i will have about 10 grand after i sell my car but thats not all i want to spend. ill prolly save up a lil more too. your replies really made me feel a lot better about the performance and has boosted my confidence. i should state that im 16 and i want to do most if not all myself because thats why i want to get it: to build my own car. if i get a car with a tired engine would it be cool if u guys help me out with the components and stuff to put in it? i want everything to look clean so i dont mind using used parts as long as it doesnt make my car look like junk. i will repost once i figure my budget out. thanks again
