U Joint Question

It there possibly a way that U Joints would squeal when they go bad? Everything that I have ever heard about them going out is a vibration. I have never heard about them squealing. I have a really nasty sound coming from my transmission tunnel. It happens when the car is rolling. Whether or not the engine is turning, clutch pushed in, transmission in nuetral, etc. Could the universal joints be the problem? I'm sick of troubleshooting this stupid noise. This is my last idea before it goes into the shop and I pay major bucks. Please help! Thanks!:)

Yes they can. Kind of a "cyclic", squawking sound especially at real low speeds. This usually occurs when they are dry of grease. If they are OEM, have no grease fittings and have some years on them, just replace 'em. If equipped with the fittings, grease them and see if the sound persists.

When I bought my car, the front u joint was bad.. it sounded like a squeaky old merry go round. Of course mine were the oem joints.. So they were 14 years old.. I though it was a loose exhaust pipe.. so I would change em out.. mine were like 10 bucks a piece.. I just changed em both to be on the safe side.

Its more of a constant squealing sound. They are the oem ones so I bought new ones today at NAPA (the greasable ones) so lets see if that fixes it. I bought some general bearing grease. Is there anything else I should grease while I have the car up on the lift?
