well, I think my friend may have dropped something in my engine when he was helping me tap my lower intake manifold. I asked him to tape up the runners and take the thermostat housing off.....I think he did it in the opposite direction.

When I went to crank it I heard some metallic bangs and then I turned it off. I went to turn it over by hand and it wouldn't budge. I can move the engine counter-clockwise and it'll go in reverse for about a 360* turn and then it'll just stop right there.

I took the lower off and got a magnet and tried to fish something out the runners in the head....and no luck. I can't see anything obvious either.

I guess I'm gonna have to pull a head or two

but...maybe ya'll have some suggestions?

It's like there's one point where the engine just won't turn over..whether I'm rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise.

If you had the dizzy out

Maybe something got jammed in between the chain and gear

If something got to a chamber ... seems like it would still turn over

you know, I thought that same thing...I just couldn't see why it still wouldn't turn over...and the dizzy wasn't out. Just didn't make sense.

I ended up taking the driver side head off. In the #8 chamber I took out half a crushed up washer and the other half was pretty much lodged in the piston (not sticking up that far). The exhaust valve had a few dings in it....but it doesn't look like it hurt anything. I'm still gonna have the valves checked out just in-case.

I tried turning it over after the head was off and everything was good to go.

also...I was gonna leave for mustang week tonight *little guy with curse words above his head*

I still might be able to leave tomorrow night or at least the morning after that and have a good time.

hey guys got another question:

Let's say my intake and exhaust valve got damaged (though they don't look bent or anything)....if I took the head into the machine shop, about how much do you think it'd be to check it out? How about to do the repair (not including the cost of the valve)?

I'm gonna talk to my machine shop tomorrow but figured I'd get some e-pinions

Easier way to do it. Go to the auto parts store and pick up some valve lapping compound. Put some on the valve seat, put the valve in the head, chuck it in a drill, pull the valve against the seat, pull the trigger on the drill. It'll machine the face without taking it to the machine shop. Then, you can reassemble and you're all good.

I always worry about chit like that...so once I get the upper off I fly solo until I'm ready to put the lower back on. I'd hate to loose a $5000 motor to a 5 cent washer.

well, I got everything apart and sure enough there was a washer in there.....

I took it to a machine shop and there was no damage done to the valves....just a few dings in the carbon build-up, haha.

My piston however....got a nice lil dent in the top of it from where the washer got stuck between the piston and the head. I had to get a pair of channel-locks to get it out the piston....hope that doesn't cause anything bad...

On the bright side....I'm only driving the stang for another month or two so as long as it lasts me that long I'm happy....cuz that's when I start going to town on my next build-up

I might be more worried about stress fractures in the piston than I would a loss of compression. lol

haha, that's why I'm downing it once I get back in Charleston. I don't think that shortblock has much life left in it.....oh well.

Actually, I have my supercharger belt off right now to help it out a bit

also, i found out what happened. I was looking at the tape I put on my lower intake...and it looks like someone pushed the washer through the tape while I went inside.....
