Only likely scenario I can imagine is he had some battery cable routed along under the seats/carpet back to a stereo amp and/or a poorly executed battery-to-trunk relocation, ran too small a gauge (or otherwise experiencing an electrical short), and thereby started to roast some buns. Doubting a fuel relay could cause such a mess, as a dead or failing relay would surely cause fuel delivery problems (stuttering, shutoff, hard starts, whatever) and would've surely shut off the fuel pump completely if it overheated to the point of causing an interior fire.

Wait, why am I even trying to rationalize this crap? It's a BS story. Oh well ... free post!
