okay guys, got the worse possible outcome after i tore the block down. i posted earlier about what happened, and how one cylinder wasnt making compression, and how the valves on the head, ect were working. Took the heads off, tore the engine down, to find that the block is cracked, and the piston fused to the cylinder head. So now obviously the block is done, and the heads are dead as well. Now i need to find an engine or build one up. I was thinking about the crate engine from ford racing. http://www.fordracingparts.com/crateengine/302smallblock.asp
The 5.0 L, 345 hp, 310 trq version. I have some questions though about how well it work work with what i have.
1) Can I reuse my Edelbrock RPM intake, Street Deamon Carb (650), Hooker LT headers, exaust, and ignition components?
2) What parts will i have to purchase that are needed for this swap?
3) Will the engine fit comfortably?

I have some more questions, but i have to go to work. Thanks for any help guys.
Mike

Thanks guys. will the stock motor mounts work? Also, what about the headers? The 343 simply costs to much. Plus ive heard that they are loud, have slighy piston problems (rattle, ect), and early models have some cooling issues. I dont know how much of this is true, but i simply cant affort it.
p.s Will the 5.0 work with my top loader 4spd?

If you have equalizer bar you'll have to get a bracket that bolts to the bellhousing. The later 302 blocks don't have the hole in the bolck for the clutch parts. FYI.

My headers (unknown brand) worked with both my 289 and my 5.0 gt40 ford longblock assembly. Bellhousing the same. Motor comes with flywheel (iron version...I replaced mine with a steel one). If you want to use your v belt/pullies (what I would recommend). You will need a specific balancer. I can look up the part number if you need. clutch bracket is needed as stated above. Intake, carb and such will be just fine and bolt on (might want to port match while you are there). You may need to change distributor gear based on old vs new cam.

Thats just about it. Anyone think of anything I am forgetting? Pretty easy bolt in.

Thanks allot that info cleared up allotta things. The swap doesnt seem like it should be too dificult. If i go through with the purchase, ill drop you a pm about that part number. Im starting to think that this swap will really be the best choice. The gain in HP should be amazing, plus with the car being really light, it should fly.

I have heard some people complain about crate motors....but when it came down to it, for the same price I could not build a motor as hot and then to top it off with no labor involved. I got one of the first ones, before they were in the ford performance catalog. Have never doubted my choice. Another consideration was that building a 30 year old block was still a 30 year old block. I also remembered that I had to get a new timing set as the one that came on the motor was not compatible with the eccentric needed for the mechanical fuel pump. The motor, although pretty hot, still idles good and does well in traffic, but will run up to 6000 rpms with no problem. It will take some tuning to get the power out of it, but that is expected.

For the money and if you don't have the time a "turnkey" motor is a good way to go.

Has anyone gotten an engine from them? They seem to be decently cheap, and pretty complete. Are the engines durable and whats their company's reputation?

I am really not familiar with their reputation. I found them looking for an alternative to rebuidling my 289 in a '67. I am with you that a complete drop in motor (331 stroker) that is essentially turnkey for that money is really reasonable. If you can't find someone who has used them contact the company and ask for referrals. One thing they do that caught my attention was that they dyno tune the motor and video tape it for you. If you tell them your application including trany and gears they will tune it specifically for your application. If you go this route let us know what you think. I am still a year out before I do this myself.

The more i look at them, the more they appeal to me. Their prices are low, and it seems like they put allot into their engines. Im wondering what company parts they use tho..meaning what kind of pistons, rods, crank, ect. I would hate to get a pretty engine, only to have it stuffed with junk.

Hey Nick (Dodgestang),

Email some info on that engine if you would. I'm putting together a winter project that could include a motor for my 66 Mustang. I'd be interested in that motor perhaps and since you live in the great state of Maryland as I do it would be easier to pick it up.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Nick

Latly it seems that ford racing is the only reputable company out there...it seems like it would be the safest bet to go with a 5.0L crate from ford racing. At least you know what your getting, and that its assembled properly.

Seemed like for awhile there everyone dissed ford racing stuff, or at least complete motors. But since then (4 years ago) I have seen more and more people reporting problems with motors bought elseware....but I dont remember ANYONE posting about a ford longblock having problems. Roller motor, new block, aluminum heads x heads, b303 cam. The heads alone retail for $1250. I think its a lot of motor for its price. Like I said, this motor is hot, but is VERY streetable. I am running mine with longtube headers, weiand intake, 650 holley, msd dropin distributor and coil, carter high volume fuel pump. I actually tuned my carb to run rougher at idle because it didnt have enough "idle jump" for me
