Upgrade From a 96 GT To 96-98 Cobra?

SO im tired of my car being sluggish and cant find anyone in norcal to do my PI swap....so maybe im just gonna get a cobra....Im fed up with my 2v....4v here i come im interested in a 96-98....all comments welcome.

If you can score a nice Cobra go for it! Modding a mustang is not cost-effective if you have to pay someone to do it, especially "unconventional mods" like PI head swaps since most mechanics don't even know it can be done, trust me. It sounds to me you don't work on your car so keeping a Cobra stock would be a good idea. Get one if you plan on keeping it stock since mods will be pricey. I think the only thing I would do to a Cobra if I were you is re-gear the differential with 3.73-4.10's and have SFC's and good shocks installed.

Im sorry but that has to be one of dumbest pieces of "advice" I've heard. To actually talk someone out of modding their car simply because they don't do the installs themselves is just plain stupid. Since when is everyone a master mechanic who is capable of completing every mod on their own?

Get the Cobra, mod it to hell (even if you have to have a professional do the work), and dont look back

thanks for the hellp guys but i can do simple mods....pullies swap the exhaust.. but pi swap??? i wouldnt know know how to put the cams back lol and **** honestlyim in the middle right now...keep those opinions coming

The nice thing about cobras is they are rarer and hold their value way better.

get an insurance quote on the Cobra before you buy. i wanted a 96-98 4v until i checked what the premium was going to be. insuring a 2000 GT was considerably less than insuring a 96 Cobra.

for reference, im 26 with a clean record.

Well.. ummmm 94-98 Cobras are slow also stockwise compared to today cars...

So, if you get a 94-98 snake you still need to do some work to get them up to todays standards.

96-98 cobras are still pretty damn quick.

The '96-'98 Cobra's are worth the money on looks and exhaust note alone. Let alone their higher potential 4V engine layout, higher end brake package and ability to hold resale.

I say go for it. A gear swap and simple "do it yourself" bolt ons will get you well into the 12's with the Snake, which is a lot more than can be said for the '96-'98 GT.

Someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? I actually don't think its a bad bit of advice for a novice who's never worked on a Mod motor before.

99+ Cobra or keep what you have and learn to turn a wrench. You'll be able to make some nice increases in performance between the price you'd pay to upgrade to a Cobra.

96-98's are B-headed cars, and not a bad motor to start with but out of the box they run approximately the same as a 99-04 GT with more top end performance and the heads don't flow as well as the 99+ Cobra or Mach motors. They need a set of steep gears incredibly bad (4.10's or greater) and some bolt ons to really wake them up to their near-stock potential.

really?? will a cobra only do as good as a 99-04 gt? i doubt it...ive seen 05+ gts have a hard time with them but then again im a novice??

buy a cobra > it will cost you more than a gt > and yes they LOVE heavy gears > but the look on a gt owners face when you pass them is priceless

yeeeahhh. Dont bite more than you can chew. I think we have a handful of GT's here that'll serve you on a gold platter.... JUST SAYIN. Plus. I think GT owners know there place when it comes to what to mess with and what not to mess with.

keep those comments coming guys......the only thing that worries me is that a gt can only do so much when a 4v has a stronger engine that can handle more power......give a good list on bolt ons to get my car up to par maybe to around 260hp....right nw its probably hanging around 200...and on another note im in cali so theres lots i cant do if i wanna stay legal the again....i want power
