Upgrade From a 96 GT To 96-98 Cobra?

yeeeahhh. Dont bite more than you can chew. I think we have a handful of GT's here that'll serve you on a gold platter.... JUST SAYIN. Plus. I think GT owners know there place when it comes to what to mess with and what not to mess with.

+1

keep those comments coming guys......the only thing that worries me is that a gt can only do so much when a 4v has a stronger engine that can handle more power......give a good list on bolt ons to get my car up to par maybe to around 260hp....right nw its probably hanging around 200...and on another note im in cali so theres lots i cant do if i wanna stay legal the again....i want power:shrug:

No doubt that a 4 valve has more power potential, but if I bought a 4 valve, it would undoubtedly be a Mach 1 or 03/04 Cobra. It would take a good amount of mods for a 96-98 Cobra to catch a 03/04 Mach 1, and would be doggone close to impossible to catch a 03/04 Cobra.

You want power out of an NPI GT? PI cams, PI intake, exhaust, gears, and a blower should leave you more than satisfied. Low/mid 300s rwhp. And it'll take down a few 96-98 Cobras along the way. :)

OR do what I should have done a long time ago and stop spending money on your car, and save for a Terminator and be done with it.

98 mustang COBRA WITH 100/hp SHOT of NITROUS
every gt I pass and bark the pipe's at turn's green with envy everytime / a cobra always turn's heads at the race track > I'd say if you want it buy it and you at least fulfill the desire to own one even if you change your mind later and sell it for a lesser 2v car

Is this really your signature? :notnice: Sounds like you have not lined up against any serious 2v cars.

really?? will a cobra only do as good as a 99-04 gt? i doubt it...ive seen 05+ gts have a hard time with them but then again im a novice??

The 05 cars are heavy. Most the sn95 B head cars you see are probably about 300 pounds lighter than the 05 cars, and they do like a lot of gear. However, it is harder to find a nice cobra for a decent price in the 96-98 body than a 2v. Once modded with just bolt ons, the cobra might get a PI 2v by 2-4mph on the top end. Also, if you work on the 4v with head/cam work, it is going to cost more than the 2v, and it might be harder to find certain parts. Just my opinion.

Cobras and 4v's are nice, but I don't rememberr the last time a NA cobra or mach beat me. Not saying that therre are not bad ass NA 4v's out there but I guess this "little 2v" can hang.

OP you have a lot of choices on what to do with you current car mod wise. Don't let the 2 cams scare you. Before my 2v I never worked on one before, and I have done a bottom end, and cams in mine. Just need to do your research and make sure you understand what you read before diving into it. Just a heads up the heads are a PITA to do in the car, it takes me less time to pull the motor to do a head job then it does to leave it in the car. Whatever you decide to do, good luck.

The cobra will hold value better but you will pay for the difference. And like several people have said, today's cars are putting out more power and you will still have to put the upgrades in to make up for that difference. Don't waste your time with bolt-ons if you are that concerned about speed. Buy a nitrous kit / forced induction and be done with it. Nitrous is ~$600 to get your foot in the door, than add a window switch for safety and you can hang with 99%+ of cars on the road.

WHAT ???? you should horse wiped just for saying that >
MY SNAKE DON"T LIKE MICE IT EATS RICE
and Hondas are the scum of the earth> I won't even let my neigbor park his in my driveway > I don't want anyone to see it in my driveway and it's a new MUGEN turbo SI

Just think a 2011 V6 Mustang has the same HP as the 96-98 Cobras and 03-04 Mach 1s.

And the average 2011 V6 is putting down 265rwhp (easily attained by even a lowely 2V with a few bolt-ons) and a measely 245rwtq (almost 40rwtq less than a bone stock 2V). Forget the extra weight the V6 has to carry around.

The V6 is still going to sound like a V6 and will not respond as well to mods as a V8 would. Im not knocking the '11 V6, but I'd still even take a PI 2V over it.

96-04 4V >>>>>> 2011 V6

Yes, they sound like a V6....but probably the sweetest sounding V6 I've ever heard. Nothing shamefull about that exhaust note.

As far as responding to mods as well as a 2V....at least you hope they don't.

Sure they're down 40lbs/ft of torque, but they're still up 45hp over the best 2V's and in stock trim are already a good 5/10ths quicker in a quarter of a mile. You'll need twice the bolt on parts with the 2V just to make up the difference.

And sure, the 4V has the potential fore more power with its larger displacement and 2-extra cylinders, but I wouldn't quite call it a superior engine. The 3.6L TiVCT is both tougher built and promotes better volumetric effiency than any of the previous Modular or Pushrod engines before it.

I too would prefer a V8 Mustang because of my own personal bias, but I wouldn't go as far to say they're superior to the new V6. As far as the rest of the car goes....well....we all know there's no question as to which is the superior built car. The new V6 runs circles around every factory GT before it on the road course, even with the weight penalty. Hell, it even outhandles the GT and the GT500.

Very bitchin ride. :nice:
