I've recently decided I want a vrs x pipe to go with my longtubes when I get them but until then i need to make a decision on x pipes. It's between an aluminized upr x pipe for $159 or a stainless steel x pipe from pypes for $189. Give me your thoughts on upr vs. pypes?

i have a pypes stainless o/r x pipe for my factory shorties. quality of the pipe is good and fitment was decent. had, and still have, some issues with leaks- especially around the driver side collector. also around where the doglegs connect to the 'X'. imo, the clamps pypes supply isnt near wide enough. price is right. i got mine for $163 shipped NEW. you cant find a stainless x pipe anywhere for that cheap.

and yes, it IS loud.

keep in mind that pypes and upr are the same company i believe. dont quote me on this but im fairly sure. i would assume fitment and quality would be similar.

and make sure you get a new gasket for the passenger side collector from your local parts store. kit does not supply one

also, i had to get a generic crush gasket for the drivers side to seal up the horrible exhaust leak i got after the install. overtightened it because it was still seeping and split it  . it barely leaks but i need to replace it.

Really? Ok I was always under the impression that vrs + upr= the same.

well, take what i said with a grain of salt. i dont know for sure. but most manufacturers wont advertise another company on their own website unless they are partnered.

edit: after thinking about it, i guess there are several companies that do sell other parts that arent labeled as their own. however i do still think upr & pypes are in cahoots :p

From 2003- early 2006 the Pypes off road X-pipe and UPR off road X-pipe were made by the same manufacturer. Pypes X's had reinforcement plates at the X. Otherwise they were identical. In 2006, we made our entire line of X-pipes modular and soon after converted to stainless. The basic design stayed the same. The 3 piece style made fitment easier, allowed for easy upgrade to cats (instead of having to buy another X pipe) and reduced shipping costs to our dealers and hence to you the customer.

99% OF THE FIT ISSUES FOR OUR X-PIPES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. Early models (2003-2006) when installed on a 'fixed flow tube' catback, seemed to be a little too long and caused the fit to be too tight.
2. On many of our X-pipes, a metal sleeve is required (and included) on the LH side leg. Most leaks turn out to be because the sleeve was NOT installed! Check to confirm you have it installed!!! If not, give Pypes a call and we'll send you one at no charge.
3. On 98-04 models, there is a very thin metal/rubber gasket that goes between the midpipe and manifolds. It this is not reused, you will get a bad exhaust leak. If it is not seated properly, you will get a bad exhaust leak.
4. Very RARELY a manifold downpipe slips through quality control with a misformed flare. If you think you have one of these, call us for a free replacement.

Currently it is being upgraded but should be available in the next 24 hours.

UPR is a dealer of PYPES brand products. PYPES also makes the newest version of UPR's X-pipes as a private label. VRS converts UPR X-pipes to catted versions.

I hope that clears everything up.

What version do you have. Does it have the sleeve in it? If it is the modular version and you do have the sleeve, lmk and I'll send you another downpipe to replace it.

i honestly do not know what version i have. i do know its a 3 piece and stainless. i actually ordered a UPR and got the Pypes, which is ok. the specifics when i ordered labeled the pipe 99-04 2v. i like the pipe but the leaks are driving me nuts. its not terrible, but noticeable inside the car under a load.

the generic crush gasket i got from advance auto parts fit well on the drivers side "collector". i had to do something because after the inital install the exhaust was beyond horrible. it still leaks some tho :(. is this where that sleeve you speak of goes? what is it and how do i get one? how much is it? how do i install it?

where the legs connect to the X, we tried out best to eliminate the leaks but could not using the clamps that came with it. ordered some wide band clamps and installed these a few weeks ago ( i kept the clamps that came with the kit ). still leaks  . should i reinstall the clamps the kit came with and just absolutely tighten the pee-waasee out of them? we got them very tight but was afraid to go much more.

please understand im not unhappy with my x pipe, just not overly happy. IMO, there is not mid pipe out there that will fit absolutely perfect.

thanks for the info and any help. very much appreciated.

.....sorry for the hi-jack :hide:

o, and the passenger side collector seems to be fine. i ordered a new fel pro gasket for it that was specific to my year car. factory gasket wasnt all that bad but would be silly not to replace it. no leaks on that side as i can tell.

just to be certain - you are referring to the passenger side, correct? if so, buy a new one like i did?

The 3 piece stainless is the new version. Your problem is on the LH side. Check to see if there is a metal sleeve installed in the flared end at the manifold. If no, I'll get you one. It just drops in the top of the pipe. If yes, also look at the manifold stud. Ford used 2 different manifold stud designs. Some of the studs have a shoulder on them that prevents the flared pipe to fully seat on the manifold. If that is the case, replace that stud with a generic parts store stud and that should solve your problem.

As far as the slip fit area leaks, the clamp may have failed but on both? hmmm. Send me a PM with your address and I will send you the metal sleeve and two new clamps.

I'm pretty sure the sound you are hearing is the LH manifold area. If that sleeve is missing, it's a bad leak as you describe. The sleeve is normally in with the hardware kit.

Please elaborate more on the different versions of studs. i think this may be part of my problem (along with no sleeve). by chance, do you know a part number on a generic stud?

also, the clamps....are they meant to be REALLY tightened? with a air gun?

+1 for pypes for customer service. thanks for trying to help me/us figure out these issues!

Well fiveoho you are absolutely correct and it seems they are in cohoots together.
