Just purchased a UPR bluethunder shifter and I’m having problems. After installation it is hard to fully select gears and reverse does not work, period. Anybody have experience with these shifters? I tried adjusting the bolts that limit the shifters travel, but still doesn’t work right. Any information will help. Thanks.

Well I've used a few of their shifters with no issues, installed about 6 of them. Still sounds like a stop bolt issue to me, if they are not properly adjusted it will not work. To rule those out put the bolts all the way in so the shifter doesn't hit it at all.

Reverse most of the time has issues in a T-5, trying putting the shifter in 4th then bring it back, most have to let the clutch out a hair to get a T5 to go ito reverse.

not to steal this from ya but how are those UPR shifters i want to get one soon....

Pretty nice, they are basically a Steeda Tri-AX with a little more spring tension for 3rd gear shifts...nice piece but I still favor a Pro 5.0

did you make sure it is the right shifter for your application? (like you did not get one for a tremec, etc).....?
did you swap the plastic bushing deal on the bottom of the lever. i dont know if that could make a difference (im sure it doesnt, cuz Mr Whiz, the Rickster, did not say anything.
just trying to think of something for ya.
and yeah, to echo other's thoughts, i would back the stops out all the way for now, till you get it to work (no rammin gears till it is solved anyhow).

good luck.

Hissin50, just for future info... the T-5, Tremec 3550 and TKO have different bolt patterns, so if it bolted up correctly it should be the correct one.

The plastic cup he is referring to is in the tranny stock, it is where the ball from the shifter rides.

Thanks for the props ;)

Rick, i figured all the different trannies had to have different bolt patterns and bosses (from reading catalog applications, and i figured what were the odds that they could all fit interchangably. LOL).

but i recall a thread about 6 months back in one of the forums, where someone had gotten the wrong shifter (i think he had gotten it from classifieds or an auction), and could not get it to work right on his T5, but i think it was fairly close to fitting.... and i did not know how close the other tranny's shifters were to being able to fit (or come real close).

that was the angle i was trying to take with my comments - we know im not the most articulate person around. scrambled brain + caveman writing = me you should see me with a crayon; i'm awesome. :-)

BTW, you are in a small group of folks (M.Y., Joe, etc) whose posts i read just for reading's sake, cuz the info you provide is so good, even if i could care less about the topic). :nice:
i remember awhile back that i was shocked to find out how old you are - i thought you were an old timer. you sure sound like one (total compliment).

:OT: Thanks..I turn the BIG 28 in just 6 days...lol

Building and racing these things forced me to learn, we (dad and I) hope to open a shop full time in the future, atleast that is the goal. I've been building motors and bolting on parts for awhile now, and beleive I've came across some weird ****. Last year was a big year for me for sidework/projects build quite a few cars locally and I am in the midst of 2 currently, not counting my beast. I have had EVERY bolt out of my 91GT, nothing is factory tight anymore, and to be honest most of the time I do not even have to think about bolt size, they just seem to come to me now. Here check this out www.cardomain.com/id/rnhperformance2

I've seen things on this 94 Cobra I'm working on that I thought were not possible so nothing surprises me anymore...I have a tons of hours in this car.

Now back to the shifter

The T-45 is close to the T-5 I believe...

The Pro 5.0 I feel has the strongest feel to it and goes into gear very, easily the dogleg is gone from 3rd gear as well.

The Steeda and UPR shifters use a spring to help guide it into gears which also makes it easy to use, and they are also very good.

could you elaborate a bit? Does it grind going into gear? Does it even go into gear? Is the car running when you do it? Do you have a short gear lever? Does the shifter lever move freely when it is out of the car? It's possible the shifter is defective, and something is inhibiting the the pivot from moving.

i think we might want to make sure the point of clutch engagement is on track too, at this point. are you engaging right off the floor, when it does work?

I bought one of the UPR Blue Thunder shifters at WFC5, installed it right at the track. Within 30 minutes, stupid back end bolts :) It worked like a charm on my 89 GT. I got rid of that car. Of course you need to adjust your gear stops. But hey, its a good investment, quality shifter, and its cheaper than most other ones :)
