There is more behind getting gears just to make up for no power....like for instance...i will be running 4.30's when i get my h/c/i upgrade this winter.

Its all about matching the combo and giving the car what it needs or will use the best.

Yeah but don't you have to worry about running out of gear though. 1st would be freakin useless when you go with bigger engine AND bigger gears. I can see bigger gears as a first mod for mostly stock cars.

It also depends on what rpm range you shifting/working with as well. If your combo is designed/geared to shift at 7,000 rpms than 4.30 is not a problem (if the cars a weekend warrior/stip only car).

that 6speed better be a viper spec. as the reg. t56 trans. 6th gear is almost the same at the t5's 5th. The 5th in the reg. t56 is like a gear between 4th and 5th in a t5. So adding gears will do nothing.

Also a taller tire will "take" gear away so if you run say a 33x14.5x15 fatty tire out back you will need a bit more gear just to be were the car would have been if a stock tire was used.

Gear is very important to rpms as posted.

So if you get a 6 speed tranny with a bigger motor then bigger gears become more practacle. I'm seeing "spending more money so you can spend more money" thing again.

Its not necessarily more motor more gear...its the combination of the whole car as one unit working together. Take the new 4.6's for example...like on Mach 1's the first thing they do is get a 4.10 ATLEAST if not a 4.30. The 05 stangs are gonna need ATLEAST a 4.10 too...if not a 4.30 FOR SURE with their extra weight. Their engines are different then ours...its a different combination.

And you cant get 4.30's and expect good results with stock suspension or cheapo tires. OFCOURSE if you cant hook up then 1st is useless...shoot 1st is almost useless in my car now with 3.73's and a stock motor. Get that thing to hook with 4.30's and a strong motor...you better hang ON!!!!

Dont fear the gear. You can have too much gear like in forced induction combos....but you wanna cross the traps at i forget exactly where on your power band...but if you dont then u can go with different tires with a different height. But like i said...its about the combo you run as a whole unit. Mine will still be an everyday driver...i go on the free way sometimes...and instead of cruisin at 80 now...i will just cruise at 70 or so and go the speed limit

Maybe when i get out of college a T-56 viper spec will finds its way to under my car....man would that be sweet

It goes back to the rpm range you're working with.

Hmmmmmmmm so where does a 6 speed put your RPM power band? Higher or lower having that extra gear? Lower I would assume having 6th be the 5th on a T-5 huh? So if you wanna go bigger on the c.i. and bigger on the gears to help overcome the weight, then a extra gear on the tranny helps keep the power where you want it on a street driven car--- down with the "low end torque". Am I getting this now or am I going wrong?

The 6th gear is for cruising on the freeway to keep the rpm's down lower. The extra gear keeps the rpm's where you want it on the freeway while cruising...not necessarily the "power band".

There is more things than just weight that makes a bigger gear needed. Its also about the engine combination and what your power band looks like. It also depends on what your suspension will be, your needs of the car, etc.

When it comes time to do a h/c/i on your car, i would recommend getting a custom cam from Ed. C. or Jay Allen or someone like that. Im getting mine from Jay Allen and he has lead me to all the other choices and components i should run to get the most out of my combo. Im sure Ed. C. does the same thing with his customers. Its really more than just buying a custom cam....its buying help from a professional to properly set up your car.
