Valve float problem

95 gt, 124k, only mods are kn, 73mm maf and flowmasters. When the car gets hot, and especially in the summer time, I can't floor it due the valves start floating. In fact I can't go past 1/4 to 1/3 throttle. It doesn't matter how fast I'm going or what gear. I've tried my timing at 14btdc, but currently have it at 12 because it runs better there. I found the oem fuel regulator was only regulating to 20psi so that was replaced and now I have it set to 44-45psi, I origianally tried it at 30psi but kept increasing it until I hit the recommended max to fix this float issue. I run 93 octane. I've read through a hundred forums but no one seems to have the same issue, or fixes they've have done hasn't worked for me. My brother thinks it may be a timing advance issue, but I haven't checked that yet. Any other ideas? Do you know how much it sucks not being able to at least go half way to the floor.

have you pulled the codes?

what makes you think it is the valves floating. you said it happens at all rpms so i really don't think it is your valves floating.

pull codes

check or replace
air filter
fuel filter
cap and roter
spark plugs
spark plug wires

I agree...I think the thing you are running into is detonation. Valve float on a stock motor is not until way high (over 6000 rpm, closer to 7,000 I believe). Detonation is something that all the 94/95 cars seem to be prone to. As mentioned above check the small stuff...fuel filter, plugs, timing advance, ESPECIALLY CLEAN THE MAF, possible the IAT as well.

I was just reading how to pull the codes with out a reader.
It doesn't happen at all rpm's, mainly above 2500. I am assuming it's the valves floating. When I gradually increase the throttle it'll sound and run fine, but around 2.5k a sound like marbles in the engine happens. Back off the throttle and it's fine. It doesn't matter what gear I'm in.

this is deffinatly detonation/pinging, not valve float. get an aftermarket temp guage to see how hot your running and check you timing, back it up to 10btdc and see if it still does it

Back your FP back into the 35-38 range with the vac line off. I'd also try 10* timing and see what happens. It's been hot as hell in this area and it will cause your marbles sound. Do searches on *pinging and detonation* and you'll find a lot of info on your problem.
Are you pulling out the spout when setting your timing?

What he said..., especially with the timing...the more you advance it, the more its gonna ping...you gotta go back.... with that kinda milage I'd be thinking about maybe using Seafoam or a top end cleaner in the motor...could be a massive amount of carbon build-up thats causing or adding to your pinging problem...your not floating the valves...Pinging whats she's doing...it's a scurge of the SN95 your dealing with.. :D
If your running a stock regulator then your not adjusting anything...sure its not an aftermarket unit on there??
I would even check out your balancer to see if the rubbers sticking way out, meaning it may have slipped some..that could be a sign your timings not where you think it is..

Definately pinging. Do a search, as there are millions of threads on this subject.

I did the same thing, I didn't know what pinging sounded like.

Good luck. Start with the basics. Clean your MAF/IAT, check plugs/wires/cap/rotor, etc.

I installed an aftermarket regulator once I saw the old one was only controlling to 20psi. I also remove the spout when adjusting the timing. I haven't checked the IAT or the balancer so I'll do those and also check to make sure the timing is advancing. I pulled the codes off last night as well and got 181/189, which is the fuel mixture being too rich, but that's probably because I have the fuel regulator at 44psi, right? I also got a 542, fuel pump circuit failure, but you can hear the fuel pump coming on when the key turns on and see the pressure on the fuel guage I installed. All three were in memory, do you guys know how to clear the memory?

This ping started with everything stock. Everything that's been put on, except for the flows, has been to try and resolve the ping. I've got a lot of info from this and other threads that I'm going to check this weekend. Hopefully have good news on Monday.

Pinging

Your car is definately pinging. Set your timing to 10* stock, put in some regular gas and start from there. I had a horrible pinging problem (like marbles in the motor 2000rpm plus) and all it took was a really good cleaning of the MAF and changed my fuel filter. JUst make sure when u clean your maf you do it well. I did a half as job the first time... didn't take it all the way out. Second time I took it all the way out and used a cutip and electronic/head cleaner and cleaned the **** off it (gently). When I put it back together... WOW. no pinging, more power it was great. Then from there try and advance your timing for some more power.

It's fixed

Cleaning the MAF did it. I pulled it and even thought it looked clean, but I sprayed some cleaner and used a q-tip and low and behold they were both coated with something. Now that I know they're supposed to be shiny, I'll clean them more often. Feels like a brand new car.
