valve stem seal?

i think i need to do them in my car. if you let it idle for about 30 seconds and then rev it up you can smell oil, very little but you can smell it, and it annoys the hell out of me, the car uses about 1/2 of a quart of oil every 3k miles, is this usually something that happens, the motor has 102k on it, there pretty cheap, only $18 for felpro ones from auto zone, im pissed because i had it all apart about 3 months ago to do the cams has any one else had this problem, and could it be caused by the pi cams, i never noticed it before them,

Just a thought but could it be piston rings mabey also you could be sucking in oil if the PCV valve is sticking. Does it smoke at all on startup or when you smell the oil?

no smoke on start up, the only time you can see a little smoke is when a car is behind me at a red light at night, you can see it in there headlights when i rev it, im gonna have to check the pcv, i notice the inside of my intake has oil in it,

3 things.

1. Them being $18 and you having stuff apart make no difference. You cant replace the seals with the valves in there, so the head has to come off - all the money is in the labor. And having the cams off wouldn't shorten this process.

2. If the seal is leaking then when the car sits the oil that puddles at the seal to lubricate the next start up would run down the valve to the valve neck, and would burn almost all at once at start up (if you need a vid of my bro's supra i can make one, lol). During idle once warm there would be no/very little blue smoke

3. 1/2 quart ever 3k miles is fairly usually for these cars. I agree might be piston rings or pcv.

why does the head have to come off, it simple to change valve guide seals with the heads on, ive done it a few times.

I was under the impression you need to take the valves out to install new valve seals

No, you can do the seals with the heads on the car. There's one of two ways you can do it. One, get an adapter that threads in where the spark plug goes, and the other to an air compressor to pressurize the cylinder, and hold the valves up. You can pop the retainers and springs off without the valves falling in that way. The way I do it is, I feed some soft rope into the spark plug hole, and turn the engine over by hand until the rope squashes against the valves, also holding them in place. It's tricky getting the seals off with the stems poking through, but it can be done. Just don't mar the stems!

Hmm, never thought of that. Always though of seals as work that done along with head work so i grouped it in with doing seats and such. Good info, thanks.

i took the pcv out and as soon as i pulled it out, i heard a click, and felt it, i think it was stuck and when i pulled it out it unstuck, havent drove the car yet to see,

I have always done the air method. Also if your seals are really bad when coming down on compression when you hit the gas it will throw out a puff of smoke.

i drove it about a mile and i didnt see, or smell any oil, i did a compression test, 6 cylinders were 195psi, and the 2 other cylinders were 200psi not to bad for 102k

well its still doing it... i have now noticed that it does not smoke when its reved or first started, it only smokes as the rpms drop down from a rev, the pcv is not stuck but there is alot of oil in the pcv hose, i am woundering when the throttle body closes after a rev, does the iac open up right away? im think it is sucking the air through the pcv for a second or two and that why im getting it only as the rpms drop?

Did you replace the valve? Its your pcv system causing the oil burning condition. If you don't fix it you could destroy the engine. When oil gets into the compustion chamber it raises temps and causes detonation. Its like $1 for a valve. I used to change mine every oi; change when I had a PCV system.

no i i have never changed the pcv, and i have had the car almost 2 years now, and i will bet it has never been changed, the guy i bought it from was as smart as a rock...i bet its the orignal, i will try that

Don't just go to autozone, you'll be replacing it again shortly. Buy OEM Ford

A common test is to run on the highway, remove foot from accelerator which produces a strong vacuum in the intake. After a few seconds, punch the accelerator and see if you get a puff of blue smoke. If so, blame it on the valve seals and replace them... They can let vacuum pull oil past the seal which lets it run down the intake valve and into the combustion chamber when it will produce smoke...
