Hey guys. I haven't been posting much, school has been eating all of my time. Anyway, a problem has arisen with my car. Two days ago I got a nasty sound coming from the right head area. It's a knocky, scratchy, ugly metal on metal sound that responds to RPM. Today I pulled a valve cover with a friend, and found that one of the rockers was not straight. It was off by maybe 10-15*, enough so that the roller tip was barely on the spring top. We straightened it, hoping that would cure the noise, but it didn't. The car still sounds really bad. I called my mechanic, and he said when his car had the same symptoms, it was a bent pushrod. He said the loose rocker caused the pushrod to get bent in the head, and it's rubbing and making noise. I thought it might be a lifter, since when I rebuilt the top end last spring the only thing I reused was the lifters, and they're 130k miles old.
Anyway, tomorrow I am going to pull the pushrod from the crooked rocker and roll it on a flat surface to see if it's bent. If it is, then I'll stick another in it's place. Either way, I am going to order some new lifters. If it's not the pushrod, where should I look?
Next question- when I pull the intakes to install some new lifters, I am very tempted to pull my heads with them and have it all gasket matched. My mechanic said he'd gasket match the intakes to each other, then the heads to the intake, and then match the exhaust ports on the heads to a gasket for the headers. He said he'd do all of it for 200.00. Is this a good idea to have done? My heads had valve work done before I bought them, but are not ported or polished. While he's not doing a full port job, I figure a little port enlargement and gasket matching can't hurt. They're Iron GT40P heads from Ford. What do you guys think?
