Quick Update: I started a gt40 intake and head swap last week and almost done....

got it fired up today, im working on the flushing the radiator and etc, it sounded ok the ilde was horrible......sniff sniff, but i didnt have my intake box/hose on and im still figuring out some vacuum stuff.....
i was so confused using a explorer intake i might have been better off using a china gt40 with all the provisions for this mod, but on the upside, no weird noises or immediate smoke and it fired right up!!
well the MAJOR downside is there is a water leak in the rear from the lower manifold:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::(:(:(
so now everything but the damn valve covers and heads has to come off.........i dont know what the hell happened, i guess more silicone this time......

also while its here some ?'s,my spark plugs that were in the e7's don't fit in the gt40's???

1) so i picked up some autolite 765's????? they seemed to be fine but i just wanted to make sure they were proper heat range etc.

2) will a bigger tb really make that much of a difference......i mean 60 vs. 65-70mm really a worthwhile mod........i really just want to be done with the engine get my mufflers, gears, rims and paint...... so i need some pro opinions......

I just posted in tech, another member's lower leaked also. I'll copy/paste my responce and you can see if any of it will help you out..

pull it apart and make sure everything is clean. use some regular black rtv and smear a skim coat of it around the coolant ports on the head( for xtra insurance you can also do this to the intake side as well)not to thick though just a nice thin coat, then put a small dab at each spot where the head and block meet. Let it tack a little not to much then lay the gasket on the head. I use pertma tex right stuff for the end seal on the block, I don't use the cork or rubber end gaskets I hate them, right stuff is a very good gasket maker. I haven't had my intake leak yet or my buddies when we did his.Make a nice 1/4 inch bead across the block following the same pattern on the block and then go up the gasket on the heads a little bit.

next you can use the studs that are in the upper intake that hold the egr spacer/TB, they screw right into the heads and can be used to guide the intake down nice and straight w/o messing up the gaskets. you can also get some bolts from the hardware store and cut the heads off too. next set the intake down nice and straight and start the bolts in then remove the guide bolts. follow the torque pattern but go over the same pattern a couple of times, the first sets of bolts you tightened will be loose again until they all are set to the right torque spec. you should be good to go after this.

I would go with a 65 or 70mm TB, I wouldn't go any bigger than 70mm for your set up.

for example a 60mm TB flows 580-600cfm's

a 65mm TB flows 625-650 cfms maybe more depending in brand

a 70mm TB flows 675-700 cfms again maybe more depending. these are rough number also. you got yourself a boost going to the gt40 setup the TB/egr spacer will compliment this package. also what MAf you running? if it's stock also you will need to upgrade this aswell. you could do a 94-95 maf swap or any aftermarket one some are better than others, I would do a search in that. hope everything works out for you :nice:.

Yeah, you need more RTV back there. I always use Ultra Copper. That is the highest temp stuff. As said, bead some around the ending intake ports if you have normal gaskets. IF you have more expensive gaskets, with the silicon built in to them, do not get the silicone near that. It can cause a reaction and cause a leak.

just got it all apart, put rtv, put it back together, new gaskets etc etc, clean the wholes so it would torque better....and leak, leak, leak, leak, leak......:(:(:(

whats the deal. bad heads? manifold, the heads looked great the manifold was used....... its leaking down the tranny around the bel housing/starter etc if that helps......:shrug::shrug:

im seriously upset, just looking at the near grand invested for nothing..........:bs::bs::bs: screw this thing.

ok so? is it more common to be a manifold or head problem? i'll order a china, but im broke....:(:(:(:(

this the i won/have benn having problems with the intake looks really good visualy:

i didn't put a major glob at the problem spot, which im considering before i purchase a new manifold.....any pictures of where to put the globs at?

I skimmed over the thread, so I apologize ahead of time if need be.

Is the pcv gasket, screen, and valve plugged into the back?

Did you let the RTV set-up (example: overnight) and did you see if the RTV is being squished out (good sign of enough RTV)?

Good point. You are supposed to let it sit overnight.

yah im gonna try it for a 3rd time, which is legendary for being the charm i hear:rlaugh:

okay so i want to glob silicone where?
best pick i could find of a longblock if some one could put like yellow circles on ms paint or something really fast to show me where to put the stuff exactly?:

ps. its leaking in the rear left, pass side, coolant not oil, no other leaks i was having a leak up front on the same side, but now its only the rear..... maybe i did something good up front  or that just proves a bad surface on either my heads or manifolds:(

ok so let it dry overnight i dont even think i let it dry for an 20mins:shrug: im impatient with this thing now and my carelessness is costing me time and money. i already scratched up my freshly painted valve covers:notnice:...
anyways do i want to put the thing to together and let it sit for 24 hours w/o adding water or just let the stuff dry in certain troubled areas for 24 hours, then put the manifold on? more details please, i want do do this right....
and if anyone gotta a better torque sequence or what ever i did the 1st @ 20lbs 2nd @ 23lbs and 3rd time @ 25lbs*

any opinions...... and help with the pic is greatly appreciated both my heads and manifolds do seem visaully fine and the gt40 irons were clean....with no oil leaks or gasket problems:shrug:
thanks````

Get everything cleaned; put the RTV, new gaskets, and manifold on; let the RTV set for 20 mins; torque it down and leave it alone for a day. (Meaning don't add water or start it.)

When you put the RTV on the front and rear sections of the block, lay it down thick. I'm talking like 1/2" thick, so it oozes out when you set the lower down. Are you making sure to use some studs to guide the lower intake down, so you don't shift the intake gaskets? You'll get leaks for sure that way, too.

the wholes that the manifold bolt goes into....i already put silicon on them,i light glaze :( and now thinking that was not a good idea....

i used a lot of silicone, like a whole tube.....the silicon oozed out and i let it sit for at least 20minutes then torqued it down.... then to my surprise about 30mins later checked the torque/bolts and they went down further, i guess this is the silicone? if it leaks this time there is definate head or manifodl problems....i guess ill try another manifold first or take them both off and to the machine shop???

The spots that LiquidGT pointed out in the picture are a common spot for leaks, there is a decent size gap there most times. Being that I have gone what you are going through once before I know how irritating it is. Remember; its a hobby, its suppoed to be fun. Take your time, apply the RTV in excess to those areas so that it splooges out when you set down the lower manifold. I think you just did not let it sit long enough, it was probably still wet if you only let it set for 20 minuits.
Good luck bro, let us know how you make out!
