I just got carfax results on my car, and now I'm thinking that there was a VIN switch somewhere along the way. The VIN is for a V6 car, but its a complete (as far as I can tell) GT. The mileage on the carfax shows "possible odometer fraud", as the mileage when I bought it this year was lower than the last reported mileage before. And on top of that, the carfax report showed "signifcant front end damage" in a collision.
Is there anywhere else that I can find information on what this car was originally? Did ford stamp the VIN number anywhere else on the car, like on the tranny hump or in the engine bay? There is no door tag on this car ...

Any ideas much appreciated!

there should be a vin tag on every panel of the car and there is a frame plate on the core support near the driver side head light

It sounds like your cars a "flip" v6 to a v8. If everything is o.k with the car I would leave it alone and enjoy the cheap insurance . I would look at the rear end and see if you can find the i.d tag for the rear end and see if they left the 7.5 rear(common v6 rear) or swithed it to the 8.8 (All v8's have this rear)

Ok. I'll look for the core support. How much information will the frame plate tell me?

I'm guessing the vin tags on the panels are stamped on to the inner side of the panels? Is there one particular that is easier to find than others?

Thanks.

And I am enjoying the cheap insurance. But on the same note I want to know what is actually going on with my car. Carfax reporting severe front end damage sounds like bad news to me. But adding the mileage disparity lends me to think there was a half-assed swap job done somewhere along the way...

there should be stickers on them...the ones i know of for sure are the front fenders, rear quarters, bumper covers, decklid, hood, etc...the ones on the front fenders are under the hood on that lip where they go down and mount to the chassis, the rear ones are on that inner lip under the trunklid up near the glass i believe, and the trunklid is on the right side of the panel that comes down where the license plate mounts. does your car have a 150mph speedometer in it? that could explain the milage difference that shows up in your carfax report, swapping from a higher milage v6 then swapping in a lower milage v8 cluster.

Could you post a picture of one in its location, so I can be sure I'm looking in the right place?
