Should I? Discuss please... $3800 = close to 400hp

I just want to get closer to 400hp, I have no intention of upgrading my internals or doing any other substantial mods except a few upgraded suspension components and gears.

Any downsides to just slapping a KB on my 68,000 mile bone stock GT?

You take pretty good care of your car and I am not sure you should trade it or sell (in reference to the other thread).
I say go for the s/c. Why not the I/C kit? All I can advise is that you find a damned good tuner to tune it if you do the installation.

The IC is an extra $1100 and would just enable me to take my boost to a level that the stock internals could not handle anyway. Also, it can be added later. Unless my thinking is flawed, I see no need for it from the get go. I will be running 6psi.

Also, I believe that the kit comes with a tune? Is this not correct???

I think the "no-mod preventative maintenance gods" must be angry!!
Serioulsy though, I wouldn't expect close to 400hp on the non-ic'd version. Probably closer to 340. Mileage won't be an issue on your car. It is just getting broken in.

No, has nothing to do with the amount of power you can produce. It helps cools the intake temps which helps prevent detonation and allows for better tuning. Also if you ever get out in a hot day without that IC, you will be in some trouble.

get the IC.

Your thinking on the boost is a little flawed. Boost doesn't kill internals (at least not at these levels), detonation does. The intercooler evens out the chance of detonation to about the same. Meaning 9psi intercooled is no more likely to cause detonation than 6psi w/o an intercooler. Both are equally safe with the proper tune. So your deciding factor should be the money. And yes all of their kits come with a chip.

From what i have heard you will be disappointed in the 6psi kit. It will not get you close to 400rwhp especially through an automatic. Another regular poster here runs the 9psi ic'd kit and is making 380 or so through an auto and has other mods. You would be much better off imho getting the vortech mongoose kit. You will have better gains with the vortech. It has been beat to death in these forums but it is a really good value. Especially since it comes with Tim's tune and a focus pump instead of the cheap, failure prone Walbro pump in the regular vortech kit. It generates much less heat than the KB also. The KB is nice but if it isn't ic'd i wouldn't get one.

you could always use a snow methanol kit at $400 instead of the intercooler....

Thanks everybody, I am heading over to MPH to check out the Vortech Mongoose kit now... Still weighing my options.

This is true - the MAF injection kit is really nice (that is the one I got) - comes complete with everything you need. Unfortunately I don't have any performance numbers on it just yet.

No that isnt entirely correct. The detonation isnt dependent on psi levels. The IC's main goal is to cool air temps as it enters the intake track. 9psi IC is still the same as 9psi without the IC, doesn't make a difference. PSI is the measurement of restriction. Now in reality, that 9psi's power outputs are like 11 psi without the IC but then without the IC, the temps are high which can be cause for tuning issues, driving issues and could cause damages.

Detonation is one major concern when going with force induction and if you are going to have a daily driven car, I would get the IC for piece of mind. Also, the Psi levels is not what kills an engine, its a combination of different things. Power outputs, driving miss haps, lack of proper tuning, rpm, the list can go on and on.

Going with forced induction without an IC is like ****ing without a rubber.

Not true, detonation IS indirectly dependent on psi levels, because detonation is directly dependent on heat. raise the psi, you raise the heat. To stop the detonation, you have three options. Lower the air charge temp, pull timing, or add fuel. The last two rob power, the first doesn't. Also 9psi IC's is not the same as 9psi non IC'd. The intercooler lowers the psi slightly because the cooler air is more dense. so 9psi w/ IC is actually flowing more air than 9psi w/o an IC. That is combined with the abilty to add more timing is why the power levels are higher.

If you throw in the intercooler with a Vortech Mongoose kit, you're pretty much paying the same amount of $$$ as an IC'ed KB . As far as peak #s go, the average bolt on auto with a Vortech Mongoose usually makes low 300s; about the same as what a non IC'ed KB on an auto. In the end, it will take an IC and full bolt ons, and more to get an automatic near or over the 400whp mark. Also, keep in mind I have a rich MPH tune. I'm making the same bhp as a 410-420hp 5-speed. A/F is 10.5-11 so there's more in it, but I'm starting to push the limits of the stock internals.

For an automatic street car, I'd take the KB over the centri. IMO, the autos need instant boost more than the 5-speeds since autos don't have the ability to control the RPMs like a manual. Plus, for daily driving, automatics rarely go above 4K rpm. my 2 cents.

I said that, got it, then wanted more the next day. Once you get boosted, you've just started.

edit: huh, I tried editing my post and it got edited for me already? weird...oh well.

i picked up 40hp and 40lb/ft with the kit.. I had to make some tuning adjustments on the dyno but it was well worth it

This thread contains the debate on mongoose vs. 6psi KB. I didn't read the whole thing but maybe it will help your decision.

I am in the middle of deciding this same thing right now.

right now I am going to get the KB IC kit. I have considered the 6psi kit as well though. I figure when you are high roller like I am what is another $1100 really. If I dropped that on the ground I proably would not even bother to pick it up. I mean I have been know to even step up to $10 tables in vegas so money is just not really an object. ha ha

In all seriousness though the 6psi kit is nice but I have a fealing if I buy it I will just wish I had got the intercolled kit.

I am pondering on running the 8psi pulley intercooled to just give my paranoid mind some safty margin. that way if you ever get caught only being able to find 91 octane you are still safe.

I like the KB over the vortech for the main reason I don't want to buy a supercharger and and intake. I also don't ever want to replace my plastic intake if it fails which is likely eventually as I am keeping this car as it is paid for. If I get a new car I will still keep this one as a toy.
