Well after a month of [fun] trash talking at work, me and my lil 66 coupe and my buddy and his 86 Porsche went to the dragstrip Friday night.
The Carrera is not a turbo but it does have a modified engine with upgraded cam and valvetrain, exhaust, short throw 5 speed, etc.
My mods are listed below but my pistons are really holding back my performance because of the center dish in them. I believe some flat tops would greatly help my power situation.
After seeing the Porsche run a 14.6 on it's first run I thought I had him no problem. Come to find out he shifted from 2nd to 5th on that run. Oops.
On my first run my engine pulled OK in 1st and 2nd but shifted into 3rd and just hit a wall at about 4000 rpm and wouldnt go any faster. I was rewarded with a 15.5 at 76mph!! Man was I down. I was just about ready to sell the car when someone offered to buy it in the parking lot.
I went to check the timing and the starter made a horrible noise and wouldn't start. I lost a bolt and the other one was loose. I made a trip up the street to Home Depot to get a bolt.
I'm working to get it fixed while the Porsche then clicks off a 14.1. I am really down now. He comes up to me all grins and pats me on the back. I was ready to crawl into a hole.
He then makes another run at 14.1 at 99mph.
He then left before my next run.
I disconnected my vacuum advance, set my total at 38 and ran a 14.0 at 99.75mph. I had bested his best run but he was already gone.
I then pulled back in the lanes with the total timing at about 39-40 and ran a 13.91 at 100.50mph. I immediately pulled back in the lanes to try to get a 13.8 but short shifted the 1-2 shift and ran a 13.96 at almost 101mph.
I didn't even call my buddy today and tell him. I am going to wait till Monday when he starts bragging to everyone how he downed the Vinyl66. Then I will reveal the time slips.
I think I will be able to tune and drive into the mid 13's pretty easily with this combination. I felt ok about the performance for the 1st time out and knowing I am way down on compression.
