Vortech or Procharger??

Vib and I did ours at the same time.....he is 100% right about the supporting stuff.

Now, as far as cooling with the Vortech,...with the rising popularity of the Snow Meth Inj kit, you can cool your intake charge by about 60*, run way more timing, have almost zero detonation, run rich, and still make 50+ hp more.

I think I will plan on getting the 1.5 KB and maybe be done with the supporting mods. I just love the idea of full boost at 2K and all the tq they give! It will be interesting with my 3.73's!

I don't understand why you can't just bolt on a vortech supercharger kit. On thier website they say that everything is included for a "complete" installation that will give your car 108hp over stock without any other mods. So if all I want is that 108hp they say it will give me why do I need all of this extra "supporting hardware" that everyone is saying I need?? I am truly very confused right now, can't I just add all of this other stuff later if I want more out of my supercharger??? HELP ME, all I want to do is beat a ram air. LOL

Ok...Clarification.

You "could" do with ONLY the kit. It comes with an FMU an inline fuel pump to help you with your Air/Fuel ratios.

The "other" stuff is what people always want/need for better optimization.

1. Joe and got a BTM6MSD...instead of the BTM it comes with...this helps with spark AND timing (instead of just timing) IF you get this, it's more$$ for that AND a harness.

2. Most of ust spend some $$ on an IN tank fuel pump.

3. A lot of guys forget the FMU and just get larger injectors (then you need to have your Mass air meter recalibrated for those injectors.

4. You though about Cooling? Expect $350 or so for a larger al radiator.

The prices dont include tuning. If a shop installs it, ask if their price includes tuning and/or a chip (extra money)

That being said, you can hang with an LS1 with Vortech only (or with exhaust)...you wont be beating them. WIth a Vortech only/Vortech and exhaust) Expect to be 310-330 to the wheels, depending on tune....You DONT use pulleys with the S/C.

If the LS1's are low 300's to the wheels on motor only, you will run with them but not beat them..
HOpe this clarifies things a bit.

PS. NOBODY "only" wants a Supercharger

So if I just put the components that vortech gives me in the kit I can intall it in my shop at home? or do I still need a professional shop to install it, for the calibration and so on? I have a very good mechanical know how, do all of my own work and have rebuilt engines, just never played with a supercharger so I am lost. thanks very much for all of the info so far.

Superchargers are easier to intall than rebuilding a motor. As far as tuning it, I don't really know much about that, but all that you can really do with that kit as far as tuning is mess with the fuel pressure I think. But once you get the s/c on there, you will want a good custom chip burnt for it so as not to blow a headgasket.

Ok well I live in Canada, manitoba to be exact and the performance market is lets just say not booming and there are really no shops that can burn a chip around here so if I am going to need a custom chip and tuning I may just be better off to H/C/I this car and be done with it. I don't want to have to drive like 7 hrs to get a chip burned or have some tuning done later on. Just seems like it may become a hassle if I get this supercharger. I am really lost now. should just sell the 5.0 and buy an 03 cobra and live in it . lol

Well don't get to hasty, it's very possible you will need a chip burned for a h/c/i setup. Especially if you run larger injectors (24's are okay sometimes, but if you run 30's, you'll definitely need some sort of tuning capability).

On the other hand, you can always pick up a twEECer or PMS system, and do it yourself.

I don't have a supercharger and haven't installed one but here is my .02.

You can install a vortech at home in 8 to 10 hours. You should then get the car professionally tuned. a couple hundred for dyno time, to check the air/fuel ratio then if you need it adjusted the cost of a chip. Someone else jump in if I am wrong. I thinking about ordering a vortech next week and that is my plan my son and I will install it then get it tuned at Pauls Auto engineering. You want to be sure of your air/fuel, if you go to lean you can hurt the motor. My worry is my compression ratio, 10 to 1 is high for a supercharger I am told. So I won't be able to do much boost. Probably 8-10 lbs.

I hope your heads are o-ringed and have head studs. I see head gasket issues at 10psi in your future. It can be done but I'm guessing your motor wasn't built for boost.

Hi,
No the heads are not o-ringed. I will probably keep it at 8lbs. I do have head studs. maybe this winter I can do something about o-ring the heads. I actually have a lot of things to do this winter, bigger injectors maybe honing my Cobra intake etc. Always something to do to get a little more.

so if i put the kit in from vortech can i drive it for a while before I get it custom tuned and/or chipped? and if I take it easy on it is it safe??

also I would like to install it myself and as I said the closest shop that can tune is many hours of a drive away and I am wondering if it is safe enough to drive it the the shop after the install?? don't want to pay for a proffessional install if I can install myself.

Yes it will be safe to drive as long as you don't let testosterone get the better of you and you romp on it before it's tuned.

You have to cut a couple brackets, move a hose or 2, tap into the oil pan for the Vortech Drain hose etc.

From what you say about your skill, you are more qualified than some other guys who have done it successfully.

I did NOT do it myself.

My advice is see if there are any local clubs around where you can "hookup" with someone...

After a shop messed up my work, Some guys on here...Joe, Roger, Javi, Jose, and some guys I met other places, have all helped me do one thing or another to do other mods or correct what the shop screwed up.

You will get the manual if you buy the kit new...you can download it now from VOrtech and read through it to see what you think before you purchase it.

Thanks a lot I will look at the manual from vortech and get a good idea what i am dealing with and go from there. There is just so much to know and I have a lot to learn about supercharging.
