Vortech or Procharger??

I have decided that H/C/I will be a lot of extra work and hard to decide which company to go with so I have decided to just bolt on the hp's through a supercharger. I can't decide which to go with, Vortech sounds good, just bolt it on and leave it alone. Procharger claims higher hp 60% and Vortech is 49% but a procharger is a lot more money for the extra 11% of power. Basically I want to know which one is better for a guy that just wants to drive the car on a day to day basis (hit the track maybee 3 times a year) and have a chance against the elusive LS1 powered units. Any help is appreciated.

Prochargers are great and all, but not worth the extra money in my opinion for what you want. A nice Vortech V2 (or V1 if you want loud) should put you about 325hp and 370tq. That should be enough to mess with some LS1's. Plus superchargersonline sells them for like $2500.

Between the two, I would suggest getting an S trim, I use to have a P1sc, which is what I think you would want from ATI on a stock set up, I never had an issue with it and it made decent power, but I will say that I ran it without an intercooler and the intake temps were a LOT higher than a non intercooled S trim. Which to me leads to the question of why not just run an S trim and forget the hassle of hooking up an intercooler if it takes the intercooler on the P1 to compete with the air temps of the S trim? Although I believe the P1sc-2's are more efficent. S trims IMO are a proven blower and if you want to do it on the cheap there are quite a few out there for sale on the used market.

Now off of your original post, a Kenne Bell would be good, but a nice little turbo set up would be even better ;) but pricey..

What kind of power are you making with your KB set up? Is it the 1.5 or 2.2?
Details man, details!
i got the 1.5, don't have any numbers for you, but it is alot of fun to drive.
makes about 8 psi now, using a friends old pulley. I don't do any track stuff, so no numbers there either, but red light to red light, people look at me like I'm some type of hellion...sounds cool too.

the stock strut tower brace doesn't fit, not even concerned with using one

Alright there are many different opinions and I thank everyone for thier input. I heard this weekend that a guy in my area had problems with his Vortech and I am wondering are they a problematic supercharger?? or are they relatively dependable??

The Vortech unit is a direct bolt on where as the Procharger is not. Both will make great power. Cost will come into play as the Procharger is more coin. Intercooling though great is a cool option except it's not necessary on these types of blowers. Vortech's are reliable and serviceable. Never dealt with Procharger's service program so I'm unsure. KB is option as well if found for decent money.

So the general idea i am getting is vortech is an easy bolt on and very dependable. And if i am not looking for a strip car and want driveability I should look at the vortech. not procharger? does that sound right??

Let me also say that buying a blower is the easy part. The supporting hardware is the issue (at least a cost issue). The fuel system and ignition system MUST be upgraded. Now after all this you will need a tuning device or custom burned chip. So now you went from $2200 (estimated) for just the blower to adding another $1200-$1500 (estimated) for injectors, fuel pump, adjustable fuel reg., MAF, MSD box, plug wires, plugs, etc. That doesn't include installation. See my point.

for what you are looking to do, i would go with the vortech. costs less and its easier to install. you can't up the boost as much as you can later with the procharger before you run into detonation issues, but other than that. procharger is nice, but costly and more involved.

.

This is a must. IMO when you add boost you should be sitting on a dyno with a tuner pulling timing and a wide band monitoring the air/fuel the first time you get on it and see boost. If it goes lean and detonates your first impression may be a bad one if you see a big cloud of smoke due to a head gasket or worse. So as VibrantRedGT stated, supporting hardware and tuning is essential not only for a happy life, but for maximum performance.

So when Vortech says that they sell the complete kit down to the wiring connectors all that does is install it on the car?? you can't just put it on and drive it?? even with just a base system like they sell for an extra 108hp, you have to change injectors and upgrade fuel and ignition. I thought it was easier than that (first timer with boost). Sounds scary and expensive?!!

You can put 6-8 lbs on a stock motor with the T-rex pump and FMU they give you. Probably gonna be alright as long as you have the BTM set up correctly, but every set up is different and no two will tune exactly the same. And doing it the Vortech way will surely not yeild as pleasing results as doing how most do. I error on the side of caution, hence the reason I personally don't see boost until it's on the dyno and being monitored closely. Personally I would suggest you run 8-10 lbs of boost and put a walbro 255lph intank pump, 36lb injectors with matching MAF and head for the tuner to get it dialed in for a nice safe street tune. Turn around and sell the Vortech FMU and T rex on ebay to recoupe some cash since you won't need them. I'm not a fan of FMU's and 80-100 psi of fuel pressure. Also with a custom tune you can sell the BTM that comes in the kit as well since timing will be delt with via the chip.
