vortech screw type supercharger?!?

anyone see this in the april issue of 5.0?? its on page 30 in the new products section. i always wondered why company's like that never had 2 different types of superchargers. it says its only for 4.6's like the GT500, and of course the 03-04 Cobra's but i thought it was cool so i figured id post about it. heres a pic i found through google images since i dont have a scanner.

i am still clueless to this day on why kenne bell is the only company that makes a screw type supercharger for 5.0's. 5.0's have been how since when?!?!? and if they did make them an more companys made some good ones, my car would be back to fuel infection.

I think they dont make them for out cars because of the face that there is not much market for them. Twin screw blowers are expensive compared to a centrifical bower, and they arent the most efficent thing in the world.

Pushrod motors dont really need the extra torqe on the bottom end like modular motors do. Thats why i think they are so popular on OHC motors, because they give that extra kick where the 4.6 and 5.4 motors are lacking.

Seems like alot of companies are jumping on the twin screw market, i think trick flow even has a blower kit out for sale now.

theres also the fact that, at least for the kits on terminators, lightnings and gt500's, that the intake work is already done, and the aftermarket companys only have to make the blower itself instead of a full kit. its also probably a lot easier to package a twin screw for a mod motor just because of how different the intake is, allowing longer runners in the valley instead of up over the motor like the kb does. that being said, i dont see it being that hard to mount a twinscrew on basically a carbed intake. runner length would be the only issue (that, and the cost of making molds for a motor that no longer exists and for which there are plenty of centrifugal-style kits out there already).
 
didnt have a price, just thats its something new out for mustangs. you'd have to go on there site an see if they have pricing on there. i didnt look into to much becuase i dont own a 4.6 lol. just something new i thought was kinda cool
 
I wish more companys would come out with roots style blowers for the 5.0. Atleast it would give some competition to KB. How sweet would a FRPP or a Vortech Roots on a 5.0 be? I know i'd buy one for sure.

edelbrock just came out with one, i think there is only so much money in the aftermarket supercharger arena, the price is pretty low for these units as is.
 
You guys realize that the so called "new" twin screw compressor built by Vortech isn't built by Vortech at all, right? The compressor is nothing more than a rebadged Lysholm 140AX....the same unit that Whipple used to use with their kits. A nice set up, but hardly state of the art like Vortech might have you believe.

Truth be told, with the release of the 5th Generation Magnacharger a coupe of years ago and new line up of Eaton TVS blowers hitting the market last year, the traditional Twin Screw compressor is kind of the dinosaur in the positive displacement group right now. The Eaton based units when compared side by side, are now besting them in efficiency and airflow and they’re a lot cheaper to boot.

And the big reason nobody but Kenne Bell makes Positive Displacement kits for 5.0L’s has nothing to do with the OHV guys not needing them because of the 5.0L’s abundant torque making capability compared to the 4.6L. :rolleyes:

They’re not produced because there’s really no place to put the intercooler brick below the unit compressor/blower. OHV engines don’t have near the room in their engine galley between the heads that the OHC engines do. Where the OHV engines have lifters, pushrods and complicated coolant passages sealed below the lower intake, the OHV engine has nothing but empty, dry real estate. Empty, dry real estate that was deemed a perfect environment for housing a nice, thick, heavy duty A/W coolant brick. :nice:

So, since intercooling isn’t much on an option with the OHV engine, you can only run them to a certain extent (as made evident by the Kenne Bell kits), before horsepower and repeatability is going to be limited by heat.

This doesn’t make them as marketable as the plethora of Centrifugal kits (with full A/A or A/W intecooling capability, so this is the reason many companies haven’t tackled them.

That blower is designed for the Modular engines, not the OHV...sorry. :(
 
Don't get me wrong....I'm not saying that it won't be a quality set up. I just don't want people getting their hopes up thinking this is some sort of new and improved design for the Twin Screw compressor, when it clearly is not. :)
