Well my tach started acting up the other day. It jumps around and hangs up in random places. I think I can rule out the TFI as it does it even when the engine is cold. Could it be the coil? Because my shift light which I have wired directly to the coil is cutting in and out too. I figure maybe it's on it's way out. Any ideas?

Chris, do you have an aftermarket tach? If not hook an aftermarket tach up and see if it does the same thing. My factory tach freaked out on my car and runs backwards most of the time while occaisionally working correctly. I just got a nice Autometer tach and love it.

No aftermarket tach, I don't like them. I just have a shift light that's wired into it.

I would say you probably have a loose pick-up wire somewhere as you muast have disconnected it when doing the H/C/I...

I would say go over all teh connections that sem logical and maybe plug and unplug them as you may have a bent terminal in one of the connectors...

Wish I could be more help man...

I understand your position Chris. If you can find someone with an aftermarket tach that you can use to verify whether your factory tach is dead or there is a greater problem that might help.

Well today I was driving the stang, and as usual the tach was jumping around like crazy. When I got up to 3500 rpms, the car felt like it hit a brick wall, it just shuttered and so I let off. But it seemed like the motor was cutting out. A friend of mine with an older Chevy said that's what his did when his coil went out. So I'm pretty sure it's my coil going bad. Anybody else have similar experiences?

No similar experience with that, but a weak coil will start to show up at those RPM's (you are not the first to report that issue and then have a new coil fix it).

Sorry to not have firsthand experience - just recollections from having read 100,000 threads.

Good luck Chris. Besides, a new coil will look nice.

Thanks JT, now I just gotta scrounge up that thread by Ernan about coils. There was a poll with what coil everybody was running, the results were overwhelmingly in favor of the MSD I think.

And it looks like my choice only got one vote.

My vote is that the coil is shot.. The same symptoms came up for me twice and both times it was the coil. Mine came on around 3500 once then at WOT it would feel like it hit a brick wall.

Well I hope it's just the coil. It makes sense. I ordered an MSD blaster coil from summit last night, along with an MSD cap/rotor, and some FMS 9mm wires. I was planning on upgrading the coil and that stuff anyway so it's all good.

SQUEEZE&STROKE, how much for just the dizzy shipped to 76543? PM me so we don't get in trouble for sales in the forums.

It was Ernan bringing back threads from years before. I think someone started a thread about him about doing this (that stuck in my mind).

Speaking of which, I just saw him bring back one of my old ones from 6 months ago.
