Want a carb'd late model mod motor for your classic?

I had HEARD MSD was working on a standalone ignition system for the mod motors, but you were looking at $1000-$1500 JUST for the ignition... There's no distributor provision at all on the mod motor, so you're looking at a crank trigger, coil packs, and a computer control box. Doesn't seem to find in with the carbureted, KISS approach to me... :shrug: :damnit:
Yeah, I was thinking of the Cyklone system they sell. I wonder about the price too... I expect it'll be more than I'd wanna spend, but hopefully it'll only be only slightly more than a new complete MSD distributor/ignition setup ($600ish, right?). I know there are other standalone systems like the TEC line, but they are upwards of $1000 or more. :notnice:

Yep, the Explorer pull out is only $2K. And if you check their "long blocks" page, they've got decent deals on brand new long blocks which seem comparable to FRPP long block prices.

Yeah, that $44.5K for a Ford GT motor is crazy! I guess that's what you pay for a handbuilt truck motor with a blower though... :rolleyes:
 
Well, it is purty fo sure, no doubt and boy would it look sweet in a 69' 429 clone of some sorts, but I have to say that for an 8k purchase I would expect slightly more than the basic insurance warning we see on parts sold by independant fabricators: Note: The Kar Kraft Cyklone series engines are not emission legal and are to be used for off-road purposes only. :rolleyes:

Those huge heads, even in aluminum are part of the weight gain too. The block has to support them and they are Boss-9 sized heads.

Regarding price, I think the 2V mods are quite reasonable. It is the forged internals of the Lightning and FI-Cobra motors, or the 4V heads of the Mach1 or older Cobra motors that get prices climbing in a hurry. Forget the GT40, you should be able to get 1,000rwhp from a pushrod motor for that kind of money.

IMO, Ford would have been alot smarter to just alter the smallblock to have a skirted 4-bolt aluminum(or even iron) block, aluminum heads and overhead cams while keeping all other possible components the same.

Ah like the LS1, those suck!

JK, the LS1 is very impressive but that crowd is seeing problems at high boost too.

There's been discussion of cracking blocks in high boost situations. Those Mods are pretty stout setups if you get the cast iron block and forged internals. You sorta have to credit the strength with the size and weight to some degree.

Stock bottom Cobras cracked 9.99 long ago, I don't know if they're running 8s by now or not.
 
I considered it, but wasnt going to make the comparison to an LS1. Its not OHC anyway. I'm also not really concerned with how much boost the block can take, but I allowed for the possibility of a stout block design like a mod motor.....only based on the 45 year old Windsor design. Heck, at least they could have made the bellhousing and motor mounts the same.
