Don't know yet. Right now my radio setup consists of a 12-year old aftermarket cd player and 4 speakers...no amp.

I'm gonna do the 94-00 2-dim setup, with 1993 80watt amp and 6 Boston acoustic speakers. We will see how it sounds. I'm not expecting anything drastic...I just want a basic cd player that works.

The top unit does...direct plug and play swap.

The slave cd setup...not sure yet. I may have to trim the lower bracket after seeing how much clearance I have.

I also assume I just need to make a simple bracket to hold the rear of the cd player to the bottom of the top unit....which will be supported by the factory u-clip at the rear.

Should be easy....and all plug and play wiring-wise with the 1993 premium amp.

My 1993 amp and wiring should be here next week. Got them for $50. Buddy is giving me his 2000 Mach 460 2-din setup. All I need is the stupid cable that connects both of them together

Nice. I picked up one of those a while back, cleaned it up real nice and squirreled it away.

To update the thread, I retrofitted a 1993 premium cd player into my '88

Kinda a bit of a blast from the past using such an old cd player. But I like it!

my 92 coupe still retains its original premium sound cassette deck with EQ......AND IT ALL WORKS!!! have no intention whatsoever of removing it. it has one light burnt out on one of the slides for the EQ that i would actually like to have fixed. i use a small $13.00 fm modulator for my ipod tucked away in the glove box. works perfectly. no wires...no clutter...and no ones desire to pop out a door lock or window to relieve me of an aftermarket stereo! besides no one really wants to hear my Motley Crew blasting anyway. YEA i said it,,, Motley Crew! LMAO!

haha that is a blast from the past, both my 1990 f-150 and 1993 ranger splash had those headunits, I remember having the tape adapter running to my portable cd player, those were the days.

now, I was able to connect directly to the factory harness leaving the aftermarket one still in with the plug for the amp and sub still there, is there a harness i can that will plug into the factory harness and the factory radio but giving me a harness to plug the amp into?

ugg, getting the seats recovered in a couple of weeks(TMI leather kit), looks like a good time to do some cleaning!

Yes, you could make that work, but you'll need to MAKE your own harness, and you'll need a 4-channel amp with speaker-level line inputs.

Basically, the OEM amp setup on 87-92 Mustangs uses speaker-level line inputs, so you are gonna do the same thing, only use an aftermarket amp that has speaker-level inputs. You'll just create a harness, and install it inline with the head unit and factory speaker harness.

You can even add the door speakers as long as you put a bass blocker on the dash speakers. That way all the low power is filtered out and the dash and door speakers are wired in parallel and doesn't reduce the load on the amp.

Would actually be a fun little project if you decide to do it. I can supply some advice i learned from my radio install. You can check the link i posted above, but the setup is slightly different...but same principle

But yes, it's completely possible to use the OEM head units, with an aftermarket amp and aftermarket speakers...even add a sub box. How well will it sound? No clue.

all I would need to do is get a mono signal to the amp and the remote to turn it on right? could i splice into the right and left speaker signals for the sound and power for the remote signal?
I already have the amp wired up and it only powers the sub.

You could do that as well. If you buy a line-converter, and tap in, you'll get a mono signal out and converts to RCA's.

Remote turn on is in the wiring already since the system does use a factory AMP

I updated the 1990 with a ford CD player, that was moded to have MP3 input. The football amps behind the radio are not digital and have a common (-). The digital systems from the CD units have two wires for each speaker. I have a head unit from a Contour (need to make sure it has the square corners), an amp and harnes from a 1998 explorer and another part of harness from a probe. The amp is under the passenger seat, just like the 1993 mustang (only fox body with a factory CD player).

I think you push in the ON/VOL button, and then hit seek up/down or some other combo of buttons.
