Water Pump Flow Question

Well I am doing a 302 rebuild.
The Timing cover I am using is the older 85 style mechanical fuel pump style. The fuel pump part is blocked off and I am using an electric pump. I am looking for a water pump and what I have read is I need a standard flow pump. This means I need a clockwise rotation water pump correct? Summit lists both as an option for that year. I am just a little confused because sometimes people are saying reverse rotation/reverse flow or standard rotation/standard flow. I assume they all flow the same direction and the proper term is rotation not flow....

Yea thats what I was starting to wonder myself,
The accessory kit is from a 91, actually it's off of a Thunderbird limited edition.

I know nothing about a 5.0 Liter engine,...I have avoided using one since they called them that. The last "5.0" I ever built was called a 302, and it had the only pump that they made for them.

After some research it appears the 5.0 tbirds use the same belt route as a 5.0 mustang, can't say if length is the same, check part numbers for the waterpumps and belts to see if they are the same for mustangs, the routing is the same for 85's.
And yes they are reverse rotation,

hmm so if the accessory setup rotates the pump in reverse I either have to get a late model timing cover or old style accessory's... I was really leaning towards getting rid of the electric fuel pump I have and going to mechanical too.. guess I will have to scrap that idea....

I don't know if water pump rotation would matter to the timing cover, I can't see why it would. Let me find a member to chime in.

Ok, forgot to bring the link with me but it seems the water pumps need to be matched with timing covers, reverse rotation pumps have a matching timing cover for flow, standard rotation pumps have a different timing cover than reverse rotation

The whole standard and reverse rotation thing can be confusing because some vendors will list the "reverse" as standard cause that's the same rotation as the factory uses.

Not being to see your specific bracketry, here's the easy way to tell what you need:
If the smooth side of the belt will be on the pulley you need a normal 87-93 mustang pump. This is the "reverse" (counterclockwise) rotation.
If the ribbed side will be on the pulley, then you need a crown vic pump. This is the "standard" (clockwise) rotation. Most vendors will list a part number of wp641 or similar.

That's for the mustang front dress, tbird may be different (especially the MN112 cars that I think were the base for the sn95) but that's a starting point anyway.

The note I'm making here is the water inlet holes, this pic shows the rev on the left is for efi, the important thing I think is the orientation of the inlet holes are different, there are timing covers that use a reverse rotation water pumps and have a fuel pump hole.

So, will a reverse rotation pump, which is what my accessories are set up for, work with the old style timing cover that calls for the standard rotation pump? yea that's the pic I saw above, it looks like it wouldn't work right.

If you have the timing cover on the left, no you cannot use the reverse rotation water pump, that said, ford made some serpentine belt setups that have a mechanical fuel pump boss, some LTDS, F150s and crown vics where mentioned, I don't know how compatible your accessory brakets will be.

I guess my only option is to get a newer timing cover and forget about the mechanical fuel pump unless someone has another reasonable option because I don't really want to change the accessory brackets.
