Water pump question

So I'm installing my 5.0L into my car and I'm hearing that I may have a reverse flow water pump or something so I want to know how to identify a reverse flow waterpump versus a regular. Also does anyone have a diagram of how the serpentine belt should run? When I received the engine the belt was removed and i'm not sure how it should go.
 
Without taking it off the motor and comparing it to a known std or reverse pump, there's really no way to tell I can think of. If it's a 79-85 reverse pump, the telltale will be the impeller blade direction. If it's an 86-93 reverse pump, the coolant ports are reversed as opposed to a std pump.
 
If you are running a serpentine setup or it came off of one and you are using it with v-belts now, it is reverse rotation. It you took the serpentine pump, changed the pully and are now using it with v-belts yer going to have trouble cooling the motor...
 
hmmm. So what do you guys suggest doing? I don't want to take this thing apart. I bought the engine and transmission as a combo and don't want to separate to check. Can I just run the engine up to operating temperature and see if it overheats? Then switch the belt and see which way works better?
 
I thought Ford went to all rev. rotation after the switched on the Mustang and went to a serpintine belt... good to know.

What car did the motor come out of originally and what year is it ?
 
It's no big deal to pull the water pump. You can buy replacement gaskets individually. If you don't have a pump to compare it to, I have pics of the timing covers on my photobucket site of the std & rev. timing covers. Or try looking at the pump to see if it's got stock Ford engineering numbers cast into it. Post those and I or someone else can tell you what pump it is.

The Vic serpentine setup, really isn't. It uses a serpentine style belt, only there's two belts instead of one. One runs the P/S, waterpump and Alternator, the other the A/C & Smog pump. This is a good setup to use if you want to run dual alternators or a belt driven supercharger without A/C. The P/S and Alternator are on the drivers side of the motor leaving the passenger side open for something else. I used this set on my 89 Ranger's 5.0 with a high volume iron factory pump, I used the late Vic pump on my 331 in the Comet (std volume aluminum pump)
